Default Stars then dies - disconnect alt runs fine

Hello all,

2001 Ranger, 3.0 V6.

When I start it, it starts right up, then dies. I noticed the dash lights "flicker" before dying.

When I disconnect the alternator, it starts and runs fine.

Hook the alternator back up, and it dies again after starting (it has no problem starting initially)

Already replaced alternator. What's next?

Thanks!!

Colin

What are you disconnecting from the alternator. There is more than one connector.

"The connector" doesn't help when there are at least two. Are you disconnecting the plug with a few wires on it, or the one large one?

Presuming you mean the one large one, chances are the alternator is toast. Shorting a main circuit like that ground will kill the engine so there is probably an internal short in the alternator.

All connectors were taken off, there were 3, main one with a nut holding it on, and 2 other connectors, one a single wire.

When disconnected, the truck runs fine, so we replaced alternator. However, problem still exists.

Ok, well you're going to have to try one at a time then to narrow this down.
