Default Dual alternator

I was wondering if someone could help me out with this. I have a 1000 watt amp, and 6 100 watt lights, and all my other little gizmos are pulling a lot of power. I've got an optima bat and my alternator is new but I can tell it needs more power I haven't had luck finding a stronger alternator. I have had my ac compressor unhooked for a long time so if I can put it there wouldn't be a prob. If memory serves it is 130amp.

Its an 89 Ranger 2.9 4X4 extended cab with manual.

Have you tried an overdrive pulley on your alternator?

Alternators are only capable of putting out their rated amperage if they are being turned at a certain speed (~6000 rpm). Perhaps you can try turning your alternator faster by putting on a smaller pulley.

I really don't like the idea of pushing the alternator more than it was designed to do unless I can actually build it up. I'm electronically capable so building the alternator up isn't a big deal if I could find some sort of kit for it.

This is pretty interesting. I believe I've seen a small alternator that ran off the 2nd member on my cousins open wheeled. Never heard of running duals. I don't have any useful advice but I will be following this thread closely.

Take you alt. to a battery/alt. shop. They can put in a 200 amp stator. That should be plenty to run what you have. The shop here said $60 for a 200 amp stator, I thought it was reasonable.

And get a pulley that will make it produce the most power at 2,500-3,000. That should cover most of your driving, off-road, hwy, whatever

Unfortunately thats what I wanted to do but the only place in the area that did it went out of buisnes thats why I had to go with a new one, I've always had my startes and alts rebuilt. Thanks I will try to locate a shop in another town close by and do it that way.

You should upgrade the primary power wire from the alternator to the battery, and put a new 200 amp fuse on it. If you have all these accessories connected to the power distro box rather than the battery, you should run the power wire there rather than the battery.

An overdrive pulley doesn't run the alternator beyond it's design. It just gives you more power at idle. It won't overspeed the alternator, it isn't that much of a difference. They are only useful for idle increase.
