Default Loose wire somewhere

I was driving my '96 ranger down the road last night and the headlights and dash lights went off for a few seconds and came back on. Did it twice. The radio stayed on. There was static in the radio so I know there is a bad connection somewhere. Where should I be looking for that bad connection? I'd hate to put the old truck out to pasture for such a simple problem, but it would really suck to have the lights go out when I'm out on the prarie in the middle of the night and its zero degrees.
