I have a 2001 ford ranger that the speedometer quit working last night going home from work. I never saw it even come off the needle, and I don't have my ABS light on and the speedometer is the ONLY thing that is not working. I would appreciate the help, my guess is a fuse or the sensor at the top of the trany but I'm not sure.

Could you have run over an ice chunk and sheared off your cable?

I also own a 2001, and the exact thing happened to me a few days ago right after I hosed down the engine. Also my dome light is dead, as well as the auto drop on my drivers side window. I took it into the shop and they said they would have to take out the drivers seat to access the fuse box and it was going go run me a couple hundred bucks. I'm gonna just do what I can to check the wireing and fix it myself

Seriously where the heck did you take your truck? There is no fuse box under the driver seat.

Check the compartment on the dash when you open the driver door.

I took it to breaks plus and no one knew what they were doing. I wouldn't recomend them at least not in mesa az. I took a look at the fuse pannel on the inside of the drivers side door and all the fuses seamed tight. I don't know what to change out to affect the speedometer though. I'm worried that I got some water in there from cleaning some mud out from the surronding area. Do you think that may be the problem?

damn, no answers? I have the same problem in my 97 ranger/b2300. Just quit working tonight. This sites search sucks. I typed in spedometer not working and it took me to some electrical non related thread. Actually I typed in speedometer. I will refine search as this thread is not helpful. I will keep checking back here.

Well a friend of mine that is a Mazda tech said that the speedo is run by a sensor in the rear diff. Anybody else Know anything? My speedo keeps coming in and out. My haynes books says that there is no speedo cable but then went on to say that I need to remove the insturment cluster to get to it.

my 98's speed o works for maybe 5 min then its gone . its been probably 2 months and i cant seem to find any answers . i remember being told from the guy i bought it off it was not shifting out of 2nd so he wired it up to work .maby speed sensor ? .

all i know is there is a nest of house speaker wire hanging under the box above the Axel . interesting eh . i think i will go through the repair manual i have 1 more time

Iv fixed so many F@*K'n things on this truck but im stuck on this one i will take a cpl pix tomorrow to post

Interesting, my name is Shane and I'm having the same problem with my '98 ranger. My repair manual and the advice of dealerships, friends and auto parts stors have taken me to dead ends. If you find out, let me know.

I just fixed all my problems with the speedometer today. All I had to do was replace one fuse in the fuse box inside the drivers door and everything was fine. Don't waste your time and money taking this kind of problem to a dealership, they wanted to charge me a $70 diagnostig fee just to find out what was wrong. Just go online for a few minutes and study the wireing diagrams for you're truck and do it yourself. It ended up costing me three bucks.

for me I doubt it is a fuse as mine comes on and off. Congrats on your easy fix though.

Found this on autoparts.com. My friend who is an ase mazda tech said this is what I need for my speedo problem I am ordering it now and when I have it in an update will be forthcoming.

That looks like the RABS sensor. I unplugged mine and it did not affect the speedo.

I just took a stab in the dark and replaced my RABS sensor in the rear diff, just like everyone recommended. No result, my speedo is still failing intermittently. Apparently the speedometer functions using magic.

I tried this vehicle speed sensor that goes into the rear of the transmission and no result. Fuck. What could be the problem. I am hating this truck more and more. What a peice of shit. the little problems are buildding up and I cant fix them.
