I am going to try it too. What else can I do? I need my speedo as it also runs the odometer,.

I can't find a sensor like the one you showed in the picture in my transmission or transfer case. My truck is a manual 98 ranger. If you have the same intermittent failure as I do, you can unplug the RABS sensor (your ABS light will come on). I tried this and my speedo was still working, so I figured that there has to be another sensor somewhere else. Another thing that I have not tried is to trace the wiring and inspect it for damage. I suppose that the front ABS sensors could be an option, but that does not make sense to me.

that sensor went right on the rear of the tranny on the drivers side. You cant miss it. 1 nut holds it in and it is an 11 mm. I will take a pic of it if you want. But like I said it did not help me at all.

You misunderstood. They would have to remove the seat in your pants for access to your money box (wallet).

Well this is weird as all hell. While my speedo was working I pulled over and unplugged that sensor in the tranny and the speedo quit working. I plugged it back in and it started working again. I am guessing the problem is in the tranny, transfer case? LAme. No easy fix then I am guessing.

I do not know there shane. If you read my last post and a few others by ppl in this thread the sensor on the rear diff is for the abs, but I have had one person tell me that the sensor there runs the speedo and others ssay that it does not. When my speedo was working I took the wire off of the sensor on the trans and the speedo stopped and then plugged it in and it worked again, till it quit again. I am guessing the speedo in my dash is on the fritz.

alrightalrightalright....

Depending on year of truck, that sensor does different things. This I know: '01+ trucks have OSS...output shaft speed sensor located in the trans to measure speed. The sensor on the axle is a VSS(vehicle speed sensor) and it's there for the ABS system. Other trucks (98-00?) use the same VSS in the rear axle for both ABS AND speed. Earlier models use a gear driven sensor in the tcase or trans(pictured earlier in the thread).

Usually when the speedometer fails, it's either the speedometer gauge itself or it's the sensor. If whoevers truck is a VSS, simply take the sensor out and clean it. It's magnetized so gunk gets caught on it and it could be as simple as that. Or it could be toast. Maybe find someone local and swap clusters and see what happens. Could be the gauge that's a miss.

I have narrowed it down to being the gauge and I may go to the dealer and see if I can get one today, or at least oder it. The sensor in the trans is apparently working [I think] by doing what I did to check it.

Fuse 11 controls the dash. If u pull it out, the odometer stop moving too... It could be the speedo head as that was the problem with my ranger. The dealership fixed mine.

Can someone show me where the output shaft speed sensor is located on the truck?

I have a 2001 XLT 2.3L RWD.

My speedometer is bouncing when I am not moving from 10-30mph, as soon as I drive it goes back down and is normal, no issues. I do hear some electrical type noise behind the dash sound like a static noise that fluctuates by going higher and lower...etc.

Can the speedometer go bad or is there a motor on it? How would one fix it, simply replace the speedometer?

Thanks,
-Nigel
