I have a 1994 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3L. My fuel pump went bad so I replaced it and now my truck will not start. When I try to start it, it will turn over but won't start. The fuel pump doesn't engage and you can't hear it doing anything. I checked the fuses, relay, etc. You can hear the relay click but I can't figure out why my truck won't start. Any idea what the problem could be? Thank you.

Check the emergency cut off switch under the capet on the firewall, passengers side, if the botton is up push it down and try it.

mine is doing the same, but everything checks out... except the fuse block under the hood... i think that took a crap on mine... best of luck.

As with all diagnosis, start at the part which does not work. Do you have power at the fuel pump when cranking the engine? You may have a wiring problem between the pump and the relay. Work forward from the pump until you find the source of the problem.

Okay I don't have power at the fuel pump you don't hear it engage at all. I'm going to check the wiring and see if that helps.

Yes I read that and it didn't address the problem either. I went and checked and that button is pressed down like it's supposed to be.

you have to give us detailed feedback of what you checked...you forgot to tell us the answer to tomboys question......

do as post #4 said and check for power at the pump and make your way forward.......I assume the bed is still off?

How do you know you needed a fuel pump did you do a pressure test?

any chance your timing belt broke?

check the fuse block under the hood.. pull out one of the wires for the fuel pump relay, hook it up to pos battery, and turn the truck to on... if the pump fires.. its not the pump.. i was getting 12v at the battery and relay, 2.7v at the fuel cut off, and 5.7v at the pump...

I did what i stated above and i got what i should be getting at all.. 12V... so seriously.. check the fuse block, its a good chance the thing is fucked.

it should be a yellow/green wire...

I started checking everything by starting at the fuel pump and making my way forward. I tested the relay as well and it's working. The fuel pump is not getting power but at the wiring harness it is showing power. I'm not sure why. All wiring checks out there are no bad or loose connections. The fuel pump doesn't make any noise of any kind. I removed the whole fuel sending unit and checked all the connections and everything is connected correctly, there's just no power going to the pump.

There must be an open circuit in the wire to the pump but the break is inside the insulation and cannot be seen. Sometimes a tiny hole in the insulation lets water and road salt into the wire and corrodes away the copper wire. Go back to where you had power and run a new wire to the pump connector.

Just wanted to update you all because I finally got my truck running. I had a bad fuse to the computer. It was one of the fuses in the fuse block under the hood. I don't know how I missed it the first go around. Thank you all for your help.

I have a sometimes dead 94 Ranger 4x4xlt 4.0 too. Can you tell us which fuse block number or item you changed that fixed the problem?

Thanks so much. We have replaced distributor block, fuel pump relay. Worked great for a month. Now no juice to fuel pump. Truck is a college 8 hours away from me.

yes please do tell.. which fuse was it that was screwed up?
