It looks like my 04 needs a ECM . the junk yard has one from an 04 manual and 4.0 but they said it may need a reflash. How would I go about that And how can i tel if it even needs to be reflashed

Dealer will know...newer ECM's have vin numbers programmed in them and will not work without being reflashed with your vin. Not sure if this is the case for an 04 ranger. Call your local dealership and speak with the service manager. They should give you some direction and maybe a price to reflash if necessary.

I called the loacl Ford dealer. They said it is $140 to relash the computer. They need the truck, old ecm and new ecm to reflash it.

Well, I tried the new used ECM to see if I could save myself $140. Truck would not even turn over.

Put the original ecm back in, in preperation to take it to the dealer to have them reflash it. Truck started right up and idled like it is supposed to Went for about a 5 mile ride and it runs fine.

I have seen a bad ground in ECM's that can cause intermittent issues. Keep an eye on it and don't go too far for the next few days. Hopefully it won't happen again.

Well, I have an appointment with Ford for tuesday to get it reflashed, but I have to take it to work on monday(about 130 miles)
