If you hooked the terms up backwards I feel bad for you. Did you see a big spark? And you probably just fryed your starter. I did this once way back in the day when I was first learning about cars. Cost me 300 to get what I needed fixed and for a tow truck to come out.

Edit: I'm confused. It still starts? but won't turn off?

Hooking a battery up backwards on a computer controlled car is very bad, be lucky and hope you fried just the starter.

None of the above.

First the starter is not damaged by connecting the battery backwards. There is no complete circuit connected to the starter without energizing two different relays. It is protected. The relays would not be damaged either. They do not give a crap which way the current flows. To bad since the problems get more expensive from there.

You have power from the ignition circuit off the ignition switch crossing over into the start circuit off the ignition switch. To my knowledge, the start circuit off the ignition switch does not go to anything but the starter relay. Which means, there is no other damaged component connected to the start circuit that could be backfeeding power. Which means the fault would have to be IN the ignition switch or the wires immediately around it. I would have to see a wiring schematic of the starting circuit to confirm this, but in the meantime, that is where I would start.

The good news is, the engine does start and run. Which means you may have not burned out the computer and other components. However, it is hard to do a full diagnosis until the starting circuit is fixed.

Chances are there are fuses blown in the cab and under the hood. Devices with reverse polarity protection do so by suiciding the fuse.

Fire Ranger is correct. You probably fried the ignition switch and some of the wiring going into it. Good Luck.

thank you everyone for your replys. i have changed all the blown fuse there were a couple. also i think it did something to the alternator because before i did this it was putting out 14 volt and now it is only putting out around 12 volt. one of the wires that goes from the solenoid to the alternator smoked pretty bad when i had the battery backwards, it did not break but melted the coating.

Also, before you can rule out ECU damage you'll have to get it to 55MPH for a little while to see if it throws codes.

Your alternator is putting out nothing if you're reading 12 with the engine running. This is not surprising given what you did though.

A normal battery is only 12 volts. Idk why yours could have been throwing 14 volts... That would fry your system entirely since 98% of it is made to accept only 12 volts.

This makes me think, why do they not diode protect the "hot at all times" devices and the charging system?

Multiply how many diodes would be needed per vehicle X the cost each per diode X how many vehicles they build.
