Re: Door Chime / Dome Light / Door Ajar Problem
Had the same problem...Door ajar, dome light on. Figured the switch had to be in the latch. Did a lot of slamming and then came inside and did a search on this site. A little WD 40 and it is fixed. You guys are awesome...Thanks.

Re: Door Chime / Dome Light / Door Ajar Problem
Had same problem with my newly acquired 2002. Previous owner said that dealer told him that sensor needed to be replaced about two years ago at a cost of around $200, so he remove bulbs from dome light and put up with the chime. After reading your forum, I used WD-40 and immediately cured the problem. Now I'm looking for replacement lens, as he lost the old one. Any ideas? Not having much luck finding one online. Thanks

Re: Door Chime / Dome Light / Door Ajar Problem
The problem is the "door ajar switch". These switches fail especially if you are going through car wash a lot in winter. The part is available at your dealer, not that expensive, but a little tricky to install - but can be done with patience. The removable switch is located in the bottom of the front door latch.
Remove trim panel
Remove bolt and door glass channel
Disconnect door lock cylinder actuating rod from front front door latch
Unclip exterior door handle actuating rod from front door latch
Remove exterior door handle actuating rod
Remove the 3 front door latch screws
Disconnect door ajar switch electrical connector
Remove front door latch cable watershield
Disconnect front door latch cable
Remove front door latch
Lift locking tab, rotate door switch and remove - reverse to instakk

White lithium spray/grease is one of the best tools you can have in your toolbox.

Re: Door Chime / Dome Light / Door Ajar Problem
I prefer to just leave it alone. I like it when everyone that walks by my truck feels the need to tell me my light is on. makes me feel popular

How did you get to the switch/latch bracket? I noticed the the plastic coating on the latch is chipped. Would I be better off replacing it?

That's on the inside of the door jam tighten it make the push button come out some more. The door pushes that in causing door light to go off.

Re: Door Chime / Dome Light / Door Ajar Problem
I was having this problem today in my 2008.
Just while driving, the door ajar light would come on for about 20 seconds and go off by itself, or go off when I open and shut the door. I will buy some wd40 tomorrow and see if it helps.
and brando, what year is your ranger? Mine has no such switch, i think it's integrated into the latch.

This solution is exactly right and very well detailed - the door ajar sensor is $22 at NAPA. While you're in there, I would spend another $48 at NAPA for a door lock actuator. Search the forums and you'll see they all go bad at some point, and you don't want to get into the door again if you don't have to. The pics are the door ajar sensor.
One more thing - they differ from door to door so make sure to get the right one.
