Default Re: Adding cruise control

I have a 2011 model and I paid $500 for the dealer to put a little stick under the turn signal control. I really don't like it. I wonder if I can get a factory cruise wheel and have someone smarter than me make it work?

----------

My trick is a 4 cyl. auto.

I have a 2009 Ranger and I want a factory Cruise. The problem is there are no wireing harnesses to support a factory unit. the best way is to go to a junk yard and get the engine and cabin harnesses You can then by a ford kit to install. It is really a lot of work and expense. there are some good after market units that look factory but not on the steering wheel.

My 99 had all the wiring. Just did a steering column swap, got cruise and tilt now, also put in the servo and brake master cylinder.
Took about 2 hours to do it all.

I did this install on my 1996 last spring. I spen a grand total of $55.00 plus tax at the junk yard. The hardest part of the whole process was pulling the steering wheel from the column.

Couple things:

1. You do not need a whole new steering wheel. You need the buttons (obviously) and you need a new shroud that covers the back half of the steering wheel. I suppose you could cut the non-cruise steering wheel shrould, but it would probably be faster and look better to get a junk yard one.

While you are at the junk yard, look for a leather-wrapped explorer steering wheel. I love mine.

2. On a Ranger that came with cruise from the factory, there is a brake pressure switch on the master cylinder. It is designed to kill the cruise system when the brakes are applied. This is a redundant system as the cruise system is also wired to the brake light circut.

This pressure switch is normally closed (on). It is only open (off) when you apply the brakes. Because of this, you have to either swap in a master cylinder and a new pressure switch, or jump the wires on the switch connector. Looking under the hood (of a non-cruise ranger), the connector will be attached to the passenger side of the brake booster. It is only a 2 wire connector.

On some Rangers and Explorers, there was a recall due to fires on brake pressure switch. Ford installed an inline fuse harness between the brake pressure switch and the wiring harness. This recall harness has a big blue tag on it and is usually zip-tied to the ABS unit. You can't miss it. What I did for my truck was find a recall harness at the junk yard. I cut up the harness to basically be a jumper with a 1 amp fuse. The nice thing about doing this is then you have a quick plug-and-play jumper that will be weather proof and look factory. I do not like cutting into the factory wiring harness if I dont have to.

3. If you have a 95-96 Ranger, the "Speed Cont" light will not be functional on the dash. It is there, it just is not hooked up. It is a fun project to get it working. See how to: http://www.fordrangerforum.com/how-s...unctional.html

Look in the engine bay for the servo wires. Mine were on the pass fender by the firewall. Mine is a 02 though.

Look for a connector with a cap over it behind the washer fluid tank. There will be 5-6 wires to it. It will probably be clipped to the side of the engine bay.
