Default Turn Signal Problem

This is my first time posting to this forum, mainly to do with the fact that I purchased my first Ranger two weeks ago. Anyways, I read through the site for the last couple of days and really enjoyed some of the topics I've seen.

As far as my problem, I'm a fairly doesnt mechanic but have little knowledge of electrical systems and have been having a hell of a time diagnosising my turn signal symptoms. The wiper delay and washer pump work 100% when selected, yet neither my signals or hazards work when selected. I've performed short circuit and voltage tests and that is not the problem. Also, the fuses have been replaced and triple checked. The only thing I dont understand is that when either signals or hazards are selected I can hear the flashers actually working.

I guess my question is, is does anyone think that this problem could be from a faulty switch? Ideas?

The flashers and hazards use two different circuits and two different flashers. A problem with one should not effect the other. Front and back both don't work? Do the brake lights work?

Neither front nor the rear turn signals work while the brake and reverse lights work. I also dont get the turn indicator light on the dash when the hazard/signals are selected.

You've replaced the flasher relay?
Theres a gargle of wiring leading from the fuses to the steering coulmn. take the top of the steering column off and there should be few wires running to the control stick thing. i replaced my dash and mine were messed up a bit. try that route.

Your profile is empty and post doesn't mention the year, so I can't pull up the diagram. Hazards switch and turn indicators share much circuitry (all lights and wiring to them) and most comes together at a common meeting point, the hazard switch.

To recap:
1) you have blinking-clicking relay sound from both turn signal flasher and hazard circuit flasher relay.
2) no blinking parking lights, front or back
3) light bulbs are all good - no LEDs installed
4) either the common ground is missing (unlikely to affect all lights)
5) or a short to ground exists at the hazard switch (unlikely unless a fuse if blown).
6) Were it an open, you wouldn't get the flasher clicking sound.
7) Hazard switch has contactis to choosing between turn indicator and hazard function. These fail often and spraying contact cleaner and exercizing the hazard switch is a must

I'd like to pull up the wiring diagrams for a peek at the details...balls in your court.

Sorry I should've given the year and general model. I own a 1993 ranger xlt with a single cab. It's a 4wd model with 5 speed manual transmission. That should be enough information for your research. You are also correct on your observations as well.

If I remember correctly the turn signal and hazard lights use 2 different relays. But just because you hear them clicking doesn't mean they aren't bad. I've run into this problem as well, and could have sworn the relay was good, (just because they were clicking) and later found the relay itself was bad. (I cut the bad relay open and found the contacts inside were broken off of the coil plate. (Very old relays). Anyway, if you have a buddy with a ranger (or Mazda) ask if you could swap them out, just to check. Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the help guys. I have found the problem and have taken care of it. The problem turned out to be a previous owner mistake. I have already pulled off three sets of aftermarket fog lamps and some of them were run to the power distribution in the engine compartment. Several hundred feet of 16ga wire and 39 ring terminals later I have found the completely destroyed relays that once ran my signals.

Only problem I have know is a fried rear turn signal socket.

Below is the closest diagram (year uncertain) I can find which may provide some clues. It immediately occurred to me that if the tow package wires were shorted, it could do this.

Next, I would locate the two flasher relays, remove one, then the other while the hazard and turn signals are on, and feel each certain they are indeed what is making the clicking sound.

I have to go now (honeydew) but will return this evening with more.

(aside, can anyone tell me how to make my photo uploads into a full size photo instead of a thumbnail size?)

Yea, thats it. sort of. our years have only one flasher relay, Hazard and turn signal is the same one.

Just a thought...but...

PaulBennet: I'm having a turn signal issue right now as well, but, as luck would have it, I isolated the problem when I went to test the ground part of the circuitry; what went wrong with mine, for some reason, is the brake switch won't allow the turn signals on my truck to flash at all. Now, if I don't apply the brake, they work normally.

What I fail to understand is that the wiring diagram you posted doesn't show at all the location, within the circuit, of where the brake (aka the "stop light switch") switch is.

Not criticizing, just saying that sometimes wiring diagrams don't always show everything that can keep a circuit from working.
