Default Fuse #2 in Passenger compartment continues to blow

Recently, fuse #2 (10A) in passenger compart fuse panel has been blowing. It protects the Daytime Running Lights, Back-up lamps, Transmission, Passenger air bag deactivation sw and Blower motor relay. The truck operates ok, however the blower fan quits and the passenger air bag light shows up on in the instrument panel. When I install a new fuse, everything is fine for about four uses of the truck and then the fuse blows. Appreciate any suggestions.

I would suspect the wires to the O/D Cancel Switch. It is fairly common for these wires to chafe through the insulation and break completely or short to ground when the shift lever is moved into certain positions. To check the wires, take the plastic trim off of the top of the steering column and look where the 2 wires exit the hollow shifter and make a 90* turn down the column.

HazardousRanger: Thanks for responding - No I have not modified anything recently.

rwenzing: Thank You - I have removed screws from the plastic trim on top of the steering column, but am having trouble getting top trim off column since it extends too far under dash. Are there any tricks to removing this piece?

I'd try lowering the column if the truck has tilt. If that doesn't give you enough room, you may need to loosen the 4 column nuts after removing the knee bolster and its trim. I don't remember that being necessary though.

rwenzing: Big Thanks!! Thanks for additional info, I did need to remove the knee panels from the lower dash and then was able to remove the covers on the steering column. I found the O/D wires had rubbed enough on the shift rod that one wire was partially exposted causing a short. I taped the wires and repositioned them a bit. Reassembled everything and the fuse has not blown! Would appear that resolved my problem. Again, MANY THANKS! Rick G.

Glad you got it resolved.

Not to be pessimistic but I wonder how long the tape will last before the lever tube rubs through it again? If it does, I'd add something more abrasion resistant to protect the wires. Maybe heatshrink tube or vacuum line or plastic convolute or similar.

Someone may want to suggest this to Ford as well...

Thanks FireRanger, Greas suggestions - I did put a piece of shrink tube under the tape and also tried to reposition the wire so it didn,t contact the the shift rod. Rick

Recently I had the same problem with fuse 2. After reading your post, I opened the column and found the same problem. Fixed it in the same fashion described here. I joined the forum just to say "Thanks". I would not have known where to start without your advice!

Glad to hear that the info helped you. Pooled knowledge is probably the biggest asset of a forum like this.
