Location of A/C fuse on 98 4cyl ranger
Hi guys, i have a problem on my new to me 98 4cyl ranger. i noticed the other day that when i turn my temp control setting to anything but "off" the engine rpms kick down as if i turned on the a/c. even if i put it on defrosters the rpms drop. it seems like my a/c compressor starts running on any setting except the off position. is there a fuse i can remove to disable the a/c (need location please) ? i wont need it anymore this year anyways. Thanks, Dennis

Its suppose to be on in ever position except for Panel, OFF, and I think possibly Floor. It's so your compressor lubricates itself during the winter, so you don't have a frozen compressor when you try to turn it back on in the summer. Also the compressor needs to run in Defrost to remove humidity.
But if you must have it off like you want it. The best thing to do is this:

Re: Location of A/C fuse on 98 4cyl ranger
i had no idea that the compressor was suppost to run all the time. isnt that going to kill my gas mileage in the winter when i normally just use my heater and defrosters? ....so if im just using my vents in the summer i am wasting as much gas as running the a/c? and also if i use my heater im waisting as much gas as when i use the a/c? ive never had a truck with ac before this one...now i am wishing i didnt have it. gas mileage is the most important thing to me. When you have your settings on anything BUT OFF, PANEL, or FLOOR your compressor is Running. So any defrost settings, any A/C settings, or FLOOR/PANEL your compressor is running.
What is your millage? I get 23/27 and mine is an Automatic.

Re: Location of A/C fuse on 98 4cyl ranger
im not sure yet, i am still on my first full tank of gas. i am at 200 miles and almost exactly on half a tank, i was able to go about 80 miles before the needle came down (from over full) to the full mark, but the next 120 miles put me down to the half tank mark. ive been driving like a granny to see what the best mileage i can get out if this truck is. its a manual trans by the way. As much as people say running your AC kills your gas mileage. . . It really isn't all that terrible. It's not like you are going to lose 5mpg just because your compressor is running.

good idea, i may just do that if it wont hurt anything. would i need to to tape it up with electical tape? also do i need to reattach it once a month or something to lubricate it? i dont even really need it in the summer, ive always had s10's my whole life and none of them had a/c, and they all got between 400 and 450 miles on a tank...all 4cyl manual trans.

Re: Location of A/C fuse on 98 4cyl ranger
Don't judge it by the needle (I know your gonna gauge it by how much you fill it up next time, but just saying). The way your gauge reads it will drop at an exponential rate, slower at first but once you get to a quarter of a tank it will drop much faster.
Leaving out a lot of technical crap: its just the way the voltage division signal is made for the fuel tank sending unit.

Re: Location of A/C fuse on 98 4cyl ranger
correct, it had a little over a half a tank when i bought it. i drove it till the light came on...then i filled it all the way up, it took exactly 15 gallons to refill as soon as the light came on.

Re: Location of A/C fuse on 98 4cyl ranger
im alright now, i just drove to the store and checked it out, you guys are correct that the compressor isnt running when on floor or face vents. i can live with that. i thought i could on get heat by running the a/c, i will just have to use it for a few minutes to defrost my windshield, then i can put it on floor or face and get top mileage. i could of swore the other day when i checked that the compressor was running on all poositions....live and learn i guess. Thanks Guys! Dennis
