Default Tail Lights do not work - 1994 Ranger

First time poster, I have a 1994 Ford Ranger 4x4 XLT Ext Cab, 4.0L (if that makes any difference) and the tail lights stopped working, just the part that is supposed to be on when the head lights are on. Both rear turn signals, both back up lights and both brake lights work. The tail lights and brake lights share the same dual filament bulb and neither were burnt out but I changed both anyway; still the same, no tail lights and the brake lights work. Any suggestions for this newbie?

Turn your headlight switch to Park and leave the door open to see if you hear that dinger that tells you that you left your lights on.

Post results.

Heres another question:

Does your license plate lamps turn on?

I just went back out and checked and no, the license plate lamp does not work. If that bulb is burnt out could it effect the tail lights? I will have to do more checking on that tomorrow during the daytime to change it.

They are in parallel so no. Does your front park lights turn on? If they don't check fuse 10 (15 Amp).

Since your brake lights and backup work this eliminates a ground problem.

Take a look at this:

If your front lights are working I think it would be safe to assume that the problem is around connector C118 (circled in red, located at the drivers side rear of engine compartment). But this same connector feeds your brake lights etc too.

What you need to do is find this brown wire and follow it with a test light to see where its getting power and when it stops.

With the help of some friends at work we think we found the problem. There is a break in the brown wire just before a connector right in front of the drivers side rear wheel / shock area. I should be able to get it reconnected but may have to bypass the connector as there may not be enough wire in front of it for a connection.

So evidently you did have a problem at that connector.

Well, I have tail lights now, thanks to sheltonfilms for the advice and my friends for helping me track down the break in the wire. I must be getting old because crawling around on the ground beneath my truck on a 90 degree day just is not as fun as it used to be.

Thanks again for all of the help!
