Default '98 Cab Probs+Battery over 20 amps!

Hey there, I just bought a 1998 Ranger 4 cycle for a first truck at 16, and I've been having some problems. First thing was after a little over-rev shifting in 4th up a hill, battery light under the tachometer came on, and my amp gauge was to the opposite left of the high symbol. Put a load tester on the battery and with a load it was pushing 20+amps. Today I replaced the alternator, which failed every test at Car Quest, and a new Everstart battery. Since this, I have no gauges, power windows, tach/speed., dome light, etc... The only fuse I could find blown was 11 (7.5 rating) which was related to the instrument panel and resistor. Now, with a new fuse I can turn the key to Acc. and within 3 seconds a spark shows and the fuse blows, and anything farther than this is beyond me and my electrical experience.

I'm guessing on the last 2 miles riding home with the high amp output could of fried some(or most) of the wiring, if someone could shed some light on how I can find the problem(s), and fix them, would be super appreciated. Thanks!

Where is this amp gauge? Is this one you hooked up to it? I'm outta town right now so I don't have access to my wiring diagrams but I should be able to help you when I do.

So it says in your manual Instrument Cluster, DRL (daytime running lamps), and RABS resistor. So it could be anyone of those circuits. You have a 4 cylinder so that means you have just the RABS and not the 4wabs.

I would take out your cluster and check the wire plugs behind it. You can search on how to do this. Also while its out I would replace the fuse and try the key again. If it doesn't blow then there is something funny going on with your instrument cluster. If it does blow its one of the other systems. These are currently assumptions until I can get back home to confirm

Thanks for the reply. I was getting the 20+ reading from the load tester I used on the battery. In the cab I was looking at the bottom right voltage/amp gauge. I'll take look into the plugs being the panel/cluster today, i'm actually hoping the problem is there.

If you don't see anything unusually just leave the cluster unpluged and retest it and let us know what happens.

Talking Re: '98 Cab Probs+Battery over 20 amps!

I have gotten the kick panel, metal, and cluster panel off, right before I got rained out. I do not see any burnt or damaged wires, but half of the length coming from the fuse panel is electric taped. Is it possible I could find a list of what colored wires are coming from a specific fuse? I would like to take a closer look at 11's wire, without skinning any tape off.

You can do a resistance test on the fuse plug to see if the wire comming out it being grounded some where. Take one lead of your volt meter (set on ohms) to a known ground and the other to the fuse holder (NOT THE POWER SIDE!!!!). Check for the power side first.

I appreciate all the help sheltonfilms. I tried the plug and i'm getting a dead response at 0.00. I did peek in the back of the fuse box and the 11 wire does go under the hood to (i'm guessing) the power distribution box and get re-routed or something similar. So, how do I pin-point where it's getting grounded, or fix it, haha.

Did you try another fuse with the cluster out?

Give me a day or to get back to my wiring diagrams (outta town)

I didn't get a chance to between weather spikes, i'll try that tommarow. When your able to look at those diagrams, it would be awesome. I don't want to do the needle in the haystack with my truck, haha.

I disconnected everything I could find to/from the instrument panel, but the 11 fuse still blows. This has got me scratching my head now..

Ok try this pull your RABS Resistor (inside your engine bay fuse box, look at your manual for location). See if the fuse blows again.

I just re-read some things. So you got 0.00 resistance on your ohm meter? Evidently its digital. What setting did you use? I hope it wasn't like 20k. If you did you could have a resistance of like 99 ohms and it would still show 0.00. You should always use the lowest setting when checking for a ground because there will be some resistance (nothing is a perfect conductor). Try a setting like 200 not 20k or 200k.

Sorry about the delay, although I did find where it's getting grounded. The resistor disonnected stil made the fuse blow, but I took another look at the instrument panel to check the circuit board on the back, and it turns out from not taking it totally off, I missed the 1 cluster of wires with the 11/Green/Blue wire in it. The fuse does not blow with the panel totally disconnected. The wire looked in good shape, as well as the circuit board.
I also re-tried the OHMS resistance test on the lowest setting (200, I had it on 200k the first test)

----------

And the multimeter read a value matching close to some others I knew worked, so there is something in the wire.

What do you mean by 11/Green/Blue?
