Default Oil gauge wonky! Works/doesn't work?

New 2000 Ranger owner here. Oil gauge is amiss. Start 'er up it flips to middle. Stop at a light, it goes down. Go through light and bam, goes back to middle. Sending unit?

Whats the deal? Thanks!

Short answer yes, unless your engine sounds different when it "loses" pressure due to lack of lubrication.

BTW its not a sending unit, its a switch. As soon as pressure passes a threshold the switch closes and cause your needle to go straight to the middle. A real gauge will actually move with the changes in RPM.

Oil pressure switch is what its called. What engine do you have? On my 2.5 4 banger it is on the drivers side on the rear of the engine where the heads meets the block.
