Okay, after reading everything on here and printing out the how-to on changing cluster bulbs (for the removal instructions) I returned to my local "auto parts recycling" yard and bought a Cluster w/tach out of a '99 Explorer for my 2000 Ranger. It had the plastic bezel and the complete aoutomatic gear indicator cable. Glad of that, as even though I had the plastic bezel off to clean it good, could not see how the other part came apart get at the indicator, unless you tae the printed circuit off the back and I didn't want to try that.
The removal instructions were fine except for completly removing the steel knee plate in order to disconnect the old indicator cabel from the column shift (of course the instructions were just to remove the cluster to change light bulbs) Everything worked as advertised. This new cluster is the same black w/white numbers/needles as my old one which is fine. Only has 56,000 miles now versus 101,000 before. Not going to the hassle of changing odometers, just marked it all down on the receipt in case I ever trade.
Anyone interested in a 2000 Ranger, Automatic, NO TACH, instrument cluster with the plastic bezel and shifter cable drop me an email.

Everything worked and just normal use light scratching on the bezel. Cliff
