Default starting problem

I am completely non-technical, so apologies in advance.
I have a 2000 Ranger double cab, which is being a problem starting. The breakdown man reckoned it was the immobiliser operating when it shouldn't, but got it to the garage. They suggested bypassing the immobiliser since mending it would cost an arm and a leg. Tried that but first time out it failed to start again. They have had it all day again but can't seem to workout what is wrong. Does anyone have any bright ideas?
Lassemista.

With a description of the symptoms, nobody will be able to tell you anything.
