Default Driver side brake light won't go, turn signal still works...

Hi guys,

My driver side brake light won't flash when the brake pedal is depressed, turn signal and tail light still go on when light knob is switched on. Just the brake light doesn't go. I've replaced the bulb, and the brake light works for a few minutes, then as I drive, it stops working. Passenger side brake light still works fine, so I don't think it's the brake switch, since I replaced that a few months ago. Not sure what it could be, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i'm not 100% sure but maybe there's a ground connection missing?

If that's the case, it's just a matter of finding the ground wire? There's 3 wires coming to the connector, not sure which would be the ground I'm assuming that I would have to follow the wire to where it's grounded on the truck, and see if that's rusted out or broken??

usually ground wires are indicated with the color black. but yes follow the wires to check if there are any broken or corroded wires.

Do you have the seperate amber turn signals, with the tail and brake sharing the red? Or do you have red brake, tail, and turn?

it's not separate, brake, tail and turn are all on the same bulb/unit.

I had this issue with my '90.
I cleaned everything from the wires to the end of the bulb.
Also, if i remember correctly, if i put the bulb in with certain terminal on top, it wouldnt work. turn the bulb 180* and it would work correctly. Seems stupid i know, but it worked.

Ok. So to make sure I have this right...

Both tails work. Both turn signals work. But the left brake light does not work?

If this is the case, you know there is nothing wrong with the bulb or the socket. It isn't a ground. And it isn't the wiring right at the light either.

You'll have to get a haynes manual and trace out the wiring from the brake pedal to where it is joined with the signal wires. The problem has to be at that junction. There will be some diodes to stop backfeeding.

Ok, FireRanger, you had it right, I originally thought it was a grounding issue, and it was being crossfed, that wasn't the case. I followed the haynes manual from the brake pedal wiring to where it all connected in the steering column. Adjusted a few loose wires, and the brake light works. However, when I would put the left turn signal on, the brake wouldn't work after that, though the brake light works after I adjust the loose wire. I haven't taken out the whole electrical component in the steering column (getting dark now), will have to check it during daylight hours.

Well I think if you poke around in there some more, you'll find whats messed up to fix permanently.
