Default Battery going dead. Short?

This just started. Been checking my wiring mods but haven't found anything yet. Also, speedometer jumps at idle and truck not moving.

When you say "battery going dead", that isn't telling us much to go on. Please detail when it goes dead and under what conditions. Also what if anything you have checked so far.

...and a list of those "wiring mods" might well lend a clue, as well.

The battery drains while sitting. Mods include OHC, Indigo Cluster, 7" LCD Headunit, backup camera, power locks and a pair of Hella lights. I'm very good with the electrical stuff so I'm not worried about the mods. The thing that bothers me is the speedo jumping while the truck is running at idle. FRA!, I found the link while doing a search, thanks. Think I will be pulling some relays.

Speedo jumping can easily be due to voltage problems. So you have a meter? I'd like to know what the battery voltage is with the engine running. It should be steady 13.2-13.5 volts. If your alternator isn't charging, it would result in lots of dead batteries.

As for your accessories, those could be doing it if you have something wired to constant power that shouldn't be. If the alternator is working (above voltage checks fine), then i would start disconnecting accessories until you find the one that is causing the problem.

It is also entirely possible that your battery has simply reached the end of its useful lifespan.

I just replaced the battery. Checked voltage with my trusty Fluke and it shows 14.4V, over-charging?

Well, that's a little higher than normal but within acceptable I think. Definitely not the cause of your problems. I'd go to my second suggestion. Start disconnecting your accessories until you find the one that is sucking power all the time.

PS- Glove box light, if the switch is stuck on, it will be lit up all the time and kill the battery too.

Thought that I would update this thread. Well, when the original battery went dead I bought an Optima from CL. After checking everything I could think of I took the truck to the parts store to load test the battery. The Optima is bad, I just shook my head. Now I'm trying to get my $100 back! Got a cheap battery and everything works great.
