Default stalls while in neutral switching from lo to hi beams

My '88 Ranger 2.9L V6 manual stalls when in neutral switching from lo to hi beams. Wouldn't pass inspection and I asked the guy why would I ever do that. Didn't matter. He said it was the voltage regulator. It seems like a short in the steering column as when you even move the switch (turn signal toward you) it starts to stall. The ding when the keys are left in the column doesn't work anymore so could that have something to do with it. I have little money so I'd like to know before replacing parts that are still good. Anyone ever see this?

I am 100 percent spitballing here to please dont rush out and buy parts. but the ignition is mighty close to the multi function switch. This is one crazy heck of an issue for sure. snag a wiring diagram yet?

I have a Chilton guide but I haven't been able to make heads or tails of it. If I have an idea of what area to look for, I could attach a file.

If the multifunction was causing a short, it would be blowing a fuse, not stalling the engine. You have to have double zero gauge welding wire run to your steering column and a fire extinguisher nearby to stall the truck out like that.

So to be clear, if you have it in any other gear, this doesn't happen????

OK, I just checked on that. I wasn't having the stalling problem at home. The normal idle is 850 rpm when it gets nice and warmed up. I don't drive until it warms up a few minutes. To get fully warmed up now I have to drive a bit. In gear or out of gear it doesn't stall when idling faster. It only does it when down to 850.

I had been having trouble getting the truck to turn over when it was warm outside but that's only happened a couple times so far this spring. A couple times shortly after leaving the house it stalled and it didn't turn over. It starts when I apply the gas at just the right time. Don't suppose that has anything to do with this problem? Maybe I need to start another discussion if it doesn't.

A guy at the inspection place said I needed to change the voltage regulator. He had another recently that did the same thing and it fixed it. Before spending any money, does that sound reasonable?

it does sound reasonable. It is not stalling out at higher rpm because the alternator is putting out more juice. VR for that truck should be external and cheap, replace it.

Change the VR, then go back. If it does not pass tell him you will notify BBB of his ethics as to guarnteeing (sp?) it will pass insp. if you change VR.

this is a bad and stupid idea, the inspection guys has no authority or inclination as to what needs to be replaced and what does not. This is the attitude of people today, get some body to say something, then sue them. It is YOUR responsibility regardless of what ANYONE ELSE says or does.

my question is this - it's been nearly 8 months since the OP posted this thread and the problem still isn't resolved?

^^ =1 to that. No need to jump on the guy for sharing his experience with a similar issue.

Cheers

I finally got it fixed. I replaced the voltage regulator and it wasn't the problem. I noticed it would stall if I moved the key slightly. Turns out it was the ignition switch and a short. The switch was even busted. Thanks for the input.
