Default Day time running lights

Hey guys,
I want to run HID's in my truck in the near future, but I don't want to be running day time running lights. I was wondering if anyone on here had ever disconnected the headlights from the DRL circuit, as I have another plan for DRL's. If anyone could give me some insight, I was wondering if it would be as easy as breaking a tab on the headlight relay like I did for the fog light mod or something close.

Thanks

I have done this on a few vehicles when installing HIDs on customers cars, but never on a ranger. All the cars I have done it on tho, it is as simple as unplugging a plug

The reason why HIDs wil not work in a DRL is becasue DRLs have a pulsating current of around 9 volts, and HIDs take a steady current of 12+ volts to be powered. Just thought I'd give you some technical info haha

Is your daytime running light a separate bulb from your normal headlight?

No they are the same bulb, just running reduced power. I wish it was a different bulb, then I wouldn't have to worry about installing HID's, just plug in and go.

Haha for sure. I'm lucky to not have DRLs in my ranger. I've never come across a ranger that had DRLs as a matter of fact.

You basically have 1 of 2 options

Either find that plug and unplug it, or run a new wiring harness to a custom switch for your headlights

The ranger (with drl) is not setup with just a plug u can disconnect
From others who have had to do this it is a circuit.. Use the search button and you will find multiple threads on this.

I would assist you however I am on my phone.

You can do it very easily actually and you don't need any fancy harnesses or switches. The older rangers had a DRL module you just unplug and you're done. The newer rangers, it is all in computer programming. It pulse-modulates the power to the lights so the effectively operate dimmer. But it is still a 12v pulse.

All you need to do is put a 4000uf+ capacitor in parallel with a relay on the headlight power circuit. You would need to either buy the relay to go with the HID's or buy a Hi/Lo kit which already comes with one. (You should NOT connect low-beam-only ballasts directly to the headlight circuit with this setup, as you normally could do without DRL's). The capcitor smooths the pulse modulating power out to be a constant level. However, this will make them light up constantly as if they were DRL's. This is what is required if you live in Candada since DRL's are required equipment.

If you don't live in Canada, you can just go to any Ford dealer service center and they can plug into the truck and disable the DRL's completely. Then you will have normal old headlights only. No effort or mods required.

Thanks for the replies guys. It has been raining here non stop lately so I cant get outside to check really, although I have a pretty good idea of where this module is. Even if i dont find the module, I will make my own wiring harness for the HID's so my marker lights power wire would also serve as the remote on for the HID's. I know I have options, and thanks for the help guys!

You don't have a DRL module. You have pulse modulating DRL's. You can not disable those or unplug anything. You have to go to a dealer and have them unprogram it. If you live in Canada, they won't do it because it is law that they have to be there.

I do have a module actually, it was nice out today and i found it, unplugged it and no more DRL's all my lights still work as they should, ie. parking lights and night time lights (heads on lo/hi and fogs). I am going to unplug it for good on the weekend when I have the supplies to cap the connections properly. Once its nice out ill take a pic and post it up to show the location of this module. (its at the front in the driver side wheel well right above the fog lights)

No shit? I thought they started the pulse modulating DRL's in 02. Oh well, ignore everything I said beyond the first two sentences.

From what I have found, it was after 05, but maybe someone could confirm that.

Everything else you said is correct for the newer ones that don't have the module. I just lucked out i guess Should be an easy HID install now.

Yup. You can get a low beam only kit, no relay needed, and they'll plug right in. Or you can get a hi/low kit which comes with all the relays and wiring you'll need as well. I suggest no more than 8000k.

Yeah I was thinking 6000 or 8000k 35W hi/lo for the heads and 6000 or 8000k 35W fogs. Either way, my bulbs will be the same for heads/fogs.
