Default Starter or battery? 1989 ranger

OK so last sunday i drove my truck to the store twice (2 blocks away) and it was running fine. I wanted to move it to a different parking spot later and it wouldn't start.

When I tried to start it, it made a grinding/clicking noise and my battery voltage meter dropped. So I went to autozone and got my battery checked/charged. They said my battery was fine, got home, put it back in and it still did the same thing.

I cleaned my battery cables. And now my interior lights are going dim and last night it had enough battery to start and all my lights were working.

Any help/advice/suggestions? If you need more information I can give you all that I have.

I thought it was the battery at first, and that autozone lied to me. Then I thought it was the starter. And now I just don't know...

after you got it started and you let it run for a few minutes to recharge when you shut it off would it start again? if so it may have a broken plate in it... and the autozone tester just checks for enough to start your vehicle... i took a battery down to them that i knew was bad and they said it was good.... if it is indeed your battery i would say that it has a broken plate in it and it will work for a while and then wont depending on the temperature...

it hasnt started since i went to the store last sunday. it tries to, and when it does my voltage drops on my dashboard.

I took my battery out and took it to autozone in a different vehicle. the battery is from 2003.

i would replace the battery and see if that's it... i'm gonna say that it more than likely will be because batteries are only good for a certain amount of time then theyy go to crap.... i just had to replace mine in october because of the broken plate... would work fine when warm but wouldnt even crank when cold.... and if it does end up being the starter you'll have a nice new battery and not need to worry about it for a while...

yea i know. i figured it might have been the battery, but i had my father in law look at it since he knows more about cars. we jumped it and i started it and the first thing he said was 'its not the starter, you're battery is junk'. LOL. now all i need is my valve gasket covers replaced, a radio, a tire (small bubble in it) and superman accessories....haha

Glad it worked out for you. 7 years is about the max life of a battery if you're lucky.
