it coooooould have something to do with it, im no genious either, but if your seatbelt is off, it could send something to the comp saying no one is in the drivers seat so if the car gets hit, the airbag wont go off... but i have nooooo clue. this is just my assumption...

These trucks were never enabled with said feature, I have never heard of that either on any car. I think it has something more to do with braking.

Yes there are functions in many many vehicles that will intelligently fire the SRS systems based on seat occupancy among other things. The ranger is not one of them. But even if it was, a belt sensor fault would not blow fuses. They are low voltage low current supervised circuits that would just be ignored by the SRS computer.

I agree the brake light circuit then remains the more likely culprit.

okay now it blows when i even TOUCH the shifter in drive. thats if it didnt blow going into drive in the first place.

i experimented by putting the truck in drive with the parking breaks on, replaced the fuse and i touched the shifter....it blew.

someone needs to tell me how to take apart the overdrive shifter.....because when i take the cover off i cant see a way to get to the wires in the shifter, actually i dont even see any wires going into the shifter

One of the 2 wires to the Overdrive Cancel Switch is shorting to ground.

These 2 wires come out of the hollow shift lever and then travel down the top of the column. Some years have 2 separate wires, others have a twisted pair inside sheathing. The function is the same either way. Over time, the motion of the shifter may cause the wire(s) to break or the insulation may rub through.

You won't be able to see the wires well until the rubber shifter pivot cover shown below is released from its 2 tabs and pulled out of the way.

If it becomes absolutely necessary, you should be able to remove the OD Cancel Switch itself after prying the small round bezel off the end of the shift lever. This cover can sometimes be stubborn so removing it may be harder than it sounds.

FYI - the OD Cancel Switch is also called the Transmission Control Switch in some service or parts literature.

^Agreed, this is also what I was thinking. I know my old F-150 had the same damn thing happen. Its a PITA to get fixed, its just a lot of trying to get separated.

If that turns out not to be what is the culprit, I have another idea, but start with this first and then go from there.

suppose it is the culprit, it should be relatively easy to change the wire...right?

----------

where are the tabs?

The pair of wires is part of the OD Cancel Switch. You would either have to repair the wire damage or replace the complete assembly.

One tab is on the right side of the column, the other is on top.
