Default ABS fun

Thought I would tackle the ABS light along with about 10 other issues I have with the truck I liberated from my son last month. So far I have removed the front sensors and cleaned them. Were coated with road dirt and probably brake dust. Pretty simple job if this is all that has to be done. Unfortunately, the light came back on after a couple of miles of driving around town. Pulled the rear sensor this morning and cleaned it thoroughly. Dirty with some very small metal particles on it. Sprayed it with brake cleaned and wiped it clean, then reinstalled. Drove for about 20 miles until the light came on again. Interesting that I can pull over, shut the engine off and then restart, the ABS light will go off and stay off again for awhile. Preyy weird what is going on. I guess the next step is to replace the rear sensor as this is what I hear most do if cleaning does not work. Do I need to do more than just remove the front sensor from the back of the brake hub and clean, or do I need to remove the rotor and clean on the inside of that also. Thanks

For anyone following this, I ended up replacing the rear ABS sensor today. Took all of about 5 minutes once the truck was in the air and only cost about $17 bucks. Also pulled the neg battery cable to reset the codes. Ran down the road about 15 miles and it came on again... I guess Monday I will pull the rotors off the front and see if anything else need to be cleaned up there in order to put this to bed. Based on what I have done so far, does anyone else have any suggestions?

yes your on the right track. clean the tone rings (pickup rings) and inpsect them. But the ABS system is more likely to physically act up because of dirty sensors, broken tone rings or other mechanical stuff like the dissimilar tire size.
The ABS light is more likely to come on for a faulty a electrical connection, poor ground, etc.

There are ABS system scanners that will read ABS fault codes from your obd.

Can I clean the tone rings with brake cleaning solution or do you have to be really particular and careful in doing this?

Have the ABS code(s) pulled.

As suggested, had the codes pulled today and discovered the pressure switch adjacent to the master cylinder is causing the ABS light to light periodically. Mech wants to replace it on thursday and is certain it will go away as everything else tests good in my system.

If you're talking about the Deactivation Switch on the front of the master cylinder, there is a Ford Safety Recall (09S09) on that part. If the recall has not yet been done on your 2002, it should be free of charge at a Ford dealer. The recall refers to that part as a "Speed Control Deactivation Switch" but it was also an input to the 4WABS in 2002.
