Default Ford Explorer Message center questions

Ok guys i went to the local pick and pull today and got the message center from a 99 explorer 4.0 and figured out the wiring for all but one wire, it is a pink white wire, and i can't seem to be able to locate what it goes to in the explorer... If anyone knows what this wire goes to please let me know. Also I am wondering how to get the oil level/temp sensor wire hooked up so that the oil life monitor/ reset will work... again any help would be greatly appreciated

None of that will work in your ranger. You are missing sensors and other stuff needed to use it.

rwenzing put one in his ranger. However he also put in a 302 and did a lot of work to get it going.

Here is a quote from Bob

Quote:
There's a bunch of wiring involved for the trip computer/message center. Works with my Explorer 5.0 PCM because the trip computer needs the PCM fuel flow value to calculate MPG, DTE, etc. I don't think the Ranger has that PCM output active.

so do i leave them unhooked and have the message center keep tell me that the oil temp/ life is bad when i know its good?
and just out of curiosity what is the pink white wire supposed to go to?

There is a oil level/temperature sensor in the oil pan of the high end Explorers w/Message Center. My Explorer engine doesn't have the correct pan for the sensor so this is the one Message Center function that does not work in my swap. My memory is not 100% clear on this but I think I left the WH/PK unplugged and had no issues with the MC flagging the oil level. If that doesn't work, then grounding it should because that's the only other option.

A bigger question, IMO, is whether any of the fuel economy calculations will work. The answer to that hinges on whether or not the Ranger PCM can supply the correct "fuel flow" output on PCM pin 43 for the LB/PK to the MC. As far as I know, nobody has yet been able to answer that question. Without the FE, distance to empty and any other fuel consumption dependent readouts, the MC loses a great deal of its functionality.

These are the functions I can remember without looking it up:

Trip Computer
Fuel Remaining
Fuel used
Distance traveled
Distance to empty
Instantaneous fuel economy
Average fuel economy

Systems Monitor
Charging system
Low oil level
Low fuel level
Low washer fluid level
High coolant temp
Oil change reminder

Selectable metric or English units

Yeah that sounds about right, and thanks for pointing out the pins for me, me and a buddy were wondering if that level sensor could be added, and just wired up to the console but I guess not if the console gets its signal from bby he pcm, but again thanks alot guys ill let yall know how it turned outwhen I get a chanceto put it in.

The oil level/temp sensor does not involve the PCM at all. It is a straight shot from the sensor to the Message Center.

Pin 43 is the fuel flow output from the PCM that the Message Center uses to calculate and display all fuel economy related info. Your Ranger PCM connector does not have a wire at 43 and I haven't been able to find out if the PCM itself outputs a signal or not on 43. I'm not saying that it won't work, just that it is an unknown.

Just to put this issue to rest. Pin 43 (at least on a 2000 2.5L Ranger with catch code "RRH2") is not operational. I've pinned it and hooked it up to an oscilloscope and its just noise. There is a bus wire on the PCM circuit board that connects the pin to the PCM processor. It seems that everything is there, its either that the code is not there or it is and its just set to not output.

I think the only possible way to get it to work is to get a tuner and software and edit the PCM code/change parameter to output.

instead of pin 43, swap out the fuel pump for a ford explorer fuel pump. there should be an extra wire where the fuel flow sensor is. Ive seen this work before, the only problem is that you have to the same fuel pump that goes on the same year as your ranger, same year as the message center. the readout voltage changed almost every year...

example... voltage read out of the sensor starts out at 1ma @ 1 mph, voltage read out is 40 ma @ 40 mph, the 5 at 50 mph, and so on... in a 99, it starts out at 3.7 ma, so if its a non matching fuel pump, all calculations will be in acurate below 40 mph.
