Default HID's messing with my iPood.

I have a Kenwood headunit, with USB in that I use for iPod. Well, when I turn on my headlights, my iPod stops playing. I have to either turn off and on the radio, or unplug/ replug the iPod USB cable.
Sometimes, if I'm moving, it doesn't do it.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Turning on the lights might cause a sudden drop in voltage, and could be disabling that part of your radio.

You think it would pull that much amperage? Nothing happens to show it. Hmm...

Put a meter on your battery and have someone turn on the lights just to see if there is a drop. And do it while the alternator isn't running. If no drop then its probably not the problem, but might as well find out.

The startup surge of HID's is identical to the startup surge of the standard halogen lights. And that startup surge only last for approx 0.2 to 0.3 seconds. There will ALWAYS be a drop in voltage if you test that without the alternator turning (engine off). You'll get a drop with any electrical component being turned on in that condition. That's what batteries do.

The problem is more likely RF noise getting into the electronics and pissing it off. How do you have the ballasts mounted and how do you have them powered?

Never had problem since. It was over 30 degrees that day so dont know if that played factor but bottom line it shouldnt melt... I think the 55watts are known for problems...

The ballast wattage isn't making the fuse holder melt. The fuse holder melts due to poor contact with the fuse. That high resistence contact makes heat. That heat melts the fuse holder. It see it all the time, but it usually because of dirt, water, and other crap getting into the fuse holder. If it's a new devices and not a mess, its just due to the crappy fuse holder and probably a crappy fuse too. It would melt with a 35 watt ballast too.

Razors Edge, I'm not really following anything you wrote there, can you try that again. And what you're placing inline is not a resistor, it is a capacitor. It is to normalize the pulse-modulation that many manufacturers use to dim the DRL's. A capacitor in parallel will by nature will also filter out leaking AC power, which may or may not be a source of interference with these gadgets.

That would completely make sense.. I believe I read people having probs with ddm 55watt but may be wrong.

I replaced mine with heavy fuse from stereo and never had problem since... Thanks for info...

Matt, I have my ballasts mounted to the inner fender flat area behind each headlight using 3M double-sided tape. They're powered using the relay kit included in the high/low DDM setup. Its pretty new, I'll try a new fuse/ fuse holder. Its one of those craptastic clear fuses.

I don't have any extensive data to back this up. But having the ballast mounted with tape rather than screwed down with a bracket could be causing this. If the ballasts were mounted with metal brackets, it would directly ground the metal case and shield a lot of RF interference.

My headlight ballasts are mounted with metal brackets, no RF noise. My off road light ballasts are mounted with tape, lots of RF noise.
