Default chipped key question

so when i got my ranger from a used car dealer it only had one key, to get another it will cost me somewhere between like 75-100 bucks, cause of that damned chip in the key... is it possible to flash the computer to turn that off or something? i would love to be able to start my truck up with a normal non chipped key, so i can get copies or them for 5 bucks lol.

also on a side note are the chipped keys water proof?

From what I understand there is no way to turn the PATS off. So basically you gotta cough up the money and have ford program a 2nd key

Are you sure? My truck was used also and the second key is just an old style key. It will open the doors and turn in the ignition but not start the motor.

==================================
Your second key is an H75, which will open the doors & can be stuck in the ignition to unlock, but if you attempt to start it with it, it can kickoff the PATS system, and it will shut your truck COMPLETELY down. Then ya gotta have it hauled to a dealership to reboot it at the tune of an hours labor rate.

yeah i have a second key at home just in case i lock my keys in the truck then i can get them out. i heard some guys saying they tape the key under the steering column or inside it, so the comp gets the ok to start, but you can just put a normal key in the ignition. i might try that, it would be really nice to use a regular key.

I have heard of something similar. I dunno how wise it is to leave a key that will start the vehicle in the there.

Using a non-pats key doesn't disable the truck and require a tow. It just won't start.

You can program a new key if you already have two keys. There are instructions in the manual and online. Its very easy. BUT, if you only have one key, you HAVE to take it to a dealer to reprogram and add the second key.

Yeah that's what I thought... damn that sucks, I understand the safety aspect of it, but I could buy a small computer like an ipod for the price of this little chip lol seems a bit over priced. If I was to hide the key I would defitately stash that key under the cover, and use duct tape or something to cover it up just in case. The way I see it is the thief finds it they were gonna get it no matter what.

Yup. Why you ask? Because they can. They are the only ones that can do it so they can charge whatever they want. Bastards.

I just had to replace my door lock cylinders, so I decided I would get a double sided key cut. I knew that it wouldn't work with the ignition being a regular key, but I have a bent key that I was going to cut off they actual metal part and tape the plastic part under the plastic on the column. I finally got it to start with a regular key but it took a lot of moving the chipped key around to find the sweet spot. Also the double sided key doesn't turn the ignition as well so its just not worth the trouble.

Is it the flip out style? If so I was told by the dealer just to replace it was 170 dollars.
