Default Re: chipped key question

I only recieved one "vallet key" and one PATS key when I bought my truck (used). I was able touse the "vallet key" to crank the truck when I put the PATS key under the column but as mentioned above I do not like the idea of leaving a good key in the truck for someone to steal.
I bought a PATS key on Ebay ($9) and had a locksmith program it ($35). That's cheaper than $75-$100. Now that I have 2 PATS keys (one for me & one for the wife) I'm going to buy an extra from Ebay and program my own spare to keep at home.

I've been thinking about programming a 3rd key... once you have 2 keys you can program the third yourself without coughing up the dough so I've thought about making a 3rd now so if I ever lose one I still wouldn't have to pay out the ass.

Kinda on the same topic... anyone know how about programming a key fob? Same rule of thumb as the keys or no?

Cool Re: chipped key question

I just Got rid of the Problem Chipped Key in My 2002 EDGE, Three screws in the bottom of the steering column will drop bottom cover turn your key to on position and push up on small detent ball to unlock cylinder , it will slide out easily , One torx screw in the small black ignition sensor in the bottom center of column and the ring around the Key ( the Transciever ) will come out . .Tape your chip key in the center of the ring and test with non chipped key in ignition ( you may have to move it a little to get it to sense it consistently , Your Ranger always sees a chipped key , slide the ring and wire in behind dash , now go to walmart and buy a non chipped key for a buck .. Your set for Life and all it COST was 15 minutes and a $ BUCK .. Sorry didn't take pictures but very easy to do ..

There are many ways but if you want the cheapest pro job. Go to walmart-.- they make pats keys for like 50 bucks. but if you get the key itself no program it gives you instructions in the manual on how to program your own key. But you have to have a pre programed key to start the process

I have a 2004 Mustang. It has the procedure in the manual that tells how to make another key by using your other "factory" chipped keys following this certain procedure. So I went to the dealer, bought another key, came home and went through the procedure......over and over and over again. Couldn't get it to work. Went back to the dealership and complained. The service writer laughed and said I was about the 100th person to complain about this to him, that the manual was incorrect, and that the dealer had to activate the new key key in the computer......for $100.00!

The odd thing is that my company has a 2003 or 2004 F-150 that we were going to take out of town for transportation for a crew of guys. I personally took that truck to the same dealership, bought the max number of additional keys, and sat out in the dealership's lot and programmed all of them. No issues. That's why I thought I could do it with the Mustang.

The PATS keys are pretty simple devices. When you "program" new keys, you are just telling the vehicle's computer to recognize it as a valid key. You need to show it two valid keys first, to show that you are legitimately creating a new key.

The newest fob-type keys are more complicated. They need to be programmmed to the car. The fob keys actively work with the vehicle's computer, and hold data like the drivers' preferences on powered seat position, side mirror positions, radio station presets, etc..

My spare Ranger PATS key was $40, and I "programmed" it myself.

A new fob key for my MINI Cooper is $300, and must be programmed by the service department.
