Default Re: tpms light ?

I have access to Chiltons online and came up with the following tid-bits for ya:

1. "For vehicles with different front and rear tire pressures (such as E-Series and certain F-Series), the tire pressure sensors must be trained following a tire rotation. Failure to train the sensors will cause the TPMS indicator to illuminate.
For vehicles with the same tire pressures for front and rear tires, tire rotation will not affect the system."

2. "NOTE: The tire pressure sensors are not designed to be used with aftermarket wheels.
NOTE: The use of run-flat tires (tires with steel body cord plies in the tire sidewall) where not originally equipped, may cause the TPMS system to malfunction and is therefore not recommended" (I'm thinking this might be your issue? Perhaps the steel cords interfere with the signal?)

What I have gathered from reading through the system operation is that you need a very good scan tool to make heads or tails of it: I personally have a hard time believing that you can't use these with aftermarket rims (depending on the construction of the rims), as Ford would have you believe. What I do think (being a former tire guy dealing with these blasted things) is that there is a possibility that at least one sensor got damaged by the pry-bar when your tire was removed. I would recommend trying the scan tool that O'rielly's has, they have gotten new scanners that are about as good as the dealer's (The 100% refundable deposit is kinda steep though), you might be able to diagnose it with that, if you find a dead sensor, you would have a good case to go after the tire shop to have them buy you a new one and maybe even pay for Ford to install it.

I looked through the electrical schematics and it seems as though the TPMS module is part of the GEM module (and that aint a gem, that lousy module runs a lot of stuff that really doesn't need to be solid state - but that's the new Ford for ya! I dealt with those at a Lincoln dealership a few years back). I could not find the bulb in the schematics (this is chiltons after all), but I did observe that much of the items (not all) in the dash use LED's, so there may not be a bulb to pull. If it worked going in, but not coming out, I would put it on the tire shop (unless they gave you a heads-up that this might happen)
Good Luck,

Scott

^^^incorrect information on a ford, fords do not need to be retrained because they do not read individual tire pressures, even on the super duty with 65 in the front and 80 in the rear they do not need to be retrained, you can actually lower the rear to 65 without the light coming on because they are all set to go off below 65, ford just wants you to have 80

I was told by Ford that you can use them on aftermarket wheels, just have you buy new bands which 2 years ago at my discounted price ran $60 a piece.

Darkstar - Good info, I am not overly familiar with the inner workings of these, but it would make sense that they might be calibrated to a pressure - anything above is ok, and below would set the light. This thread had me curious, so I just passed on what Chilton's had to say - we all know they are not always accurate!

I think it senses the rotation. I had all my stock wheels/tires in the bed of my truck and the light still came on.

they will, but on a ford all you have to do is drive it and they will reset themselves, and now that you say that, i am wrong about the sensors in the spare, i believe it works on some but not all, most new sensors "turn on" when the wheels start turning, so you having all the wheels in the box of you truck would still make the light come on

I'm still searching for a FULL wiring diagram for my truck... would be useful for a lot of times and maybe there's a wire that could get snipped that controls the light?
