Default wont start and wires are smoking

I went to start my 97 ranger last night and it wouldn't start. The lights and radio all worked but I just got clicking noises. Then I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Somehow the wire from the battery that led to the fender relay switch had melted and was smoking. Any help would be appreciated. Wondering what its gonna take to fix it and how much.

Well you'll need new cables and the relay is probably toast too. The cable down to the starter could be toast too. As for why, a big it depends. If the starter is siezed up and you were holding it in start for long periods of time, that would melt the wires. If the starter had a short internally, that would do it too.

Heres an update....I jumped the starter to get it running and found that the starter wouldn't stop. Had to hit it pretty good with a hammer to get it to stop. Was able to get it back to the shop to work on it.

So, the starter still going is what toasted the wires but does that mean that I need to replace the starter? It's only a month old! Looks like I'll be replacing the wires as well as the relay?

The starter can not "keep running" without electrical power. Once you removed whatever you did to jumper it, the starter would no longer be getting power and therefore could not keep running. HOWEVER, if the starter's gear doesn't disengage from the flywheel, then it will keep spinning at engine RPM. Other than ruining it, this shouldn't cause electrical issues. The starter relay is open so it can't backfeed power into the truck.

So it's hard for me to determine what's really happening here. You really need to take the starter out to see what it is doing under various conditions. Something is still funky here.

Funky is right!!!! I'll be taking the starter out soon and let you know. Are there any other details that I can get to help out with this? I'm having a hard time understanding why this happened. I'm not much for electrical.

----------

Also note that something (starter, solenoid?) kept spinning even when I shut off the truck. Had to pull the battery cable off to get it to stop.

The parts store replaced the starter and the wire for free. I installed them and the truck started right up.

I'm a little gun shy of taking this truck out of town again in fear that I'll get stranded. Maybe I'll have to drive around with all of the tools in my truck just in case.

Next time your starter sticks undo your hot battery terminal should shut it down. Just a thought.

Did 2nd starter do the same thing as the one that was in there a month ago?

Just a thought, but this problem sounds like it might be an ignition switch that's left in the 'run' position, even though the key looks like it's off (bad/sticking electrical points in the switch).

This is a problem effecting his START circuit, not the run circuit. It was the wires running to the starter and already found to be either a faulty wire or faulty starter/relay.
