Dome light, Radio stopped working.
So I have a '91 Ranger. None of this has to do with the engine, so I'll skip all the mechanical stuff.
Basically, I went hunting, through a lot of rough terrain and when I got down the mountain 3-days later I realized my dome light had quit working and so had my radio.
Whoever had the truck before me wired the radio in through the lights. So when you turn on parking lights or headlights, you can also have the radio on. It worked that way for years and I never thought much of it, other than it was a little weird when I replaced the cheap deck they had in there with a better one. There were no other live wires back behind the console.
The power wire to the radio was dead, but the memory wire still worked. I hooked the power wire to that and my radio still turns on, but of course I don't have memory anymore.
My headlight switch went out on me, the spring broke and you couldn't dim the dash, and then it started crumbling apart, but the headlights still worked. So I replaced that with one out of a '94 and all the pertinent stuff worked. Could dim the dash and life was good.
I thought that would also fix my dome-light, because in my model, the same switch is also manual domelight control. Nothing.
I've done most of the basic troubleshooting.
All my fuses are good.
I checked the door-switches that trigger when the domelight comes on.
I've traced the radio wires back to the wiring harness, but didn't find a junction, so I didn't bother testing them.
I traced the domelight wires (quite a thick bunch, really) back under the floor and up behind the e-brake to the wiring harness. The domelight group of wires (at least five) junction into a tangle of wires with probably about 10 which junctions into another tangle of about 30. Testing any of those and tracing one wire through it was a daunting task because some of the colours repeat themselves, (there's 4 of the same colour green for instance).
The biggest tangle goes into the wiring harness.
I went to a junkyard and grabbed a new domelight - the whole shebang. The guy there gave it to me for free, I hooked it all back up and nothing.
Got two new bulbs of different brands. Nothing.
I used my circuit tester at the domelight fixture and it's dead.
I'm thinking I have a bad relay somewhere...or maybe a burnt out wire? I just haven't the foggiest idea as to where to start. I don't want to start chopping wires in my wiring harness just to test them.
It kind of looks like part of my domelight wires go off into the body paneling on the drivers side, but that might just be for the switch, that seems fine when I checked it out. Plus, the passenger-side one most likely would not have quit working at the same time.
Anyone have any ideas on where I should start? I feel like I'd have to rip out the entire dash and paneling just to get a good look at things. I'm leery to just go chopping into wires, as well. So I was hoping someone knew where to look for a relay or a likely culprit...Or at least a place to start chopping, because it really annoys me, since I can never find anything at night.
'91 Ranger, 2.3L 4-Banger knocking out 140 HP. Plopped the head out of '94 and an RV cam in it. 2WD, zero options. But, I love her to death.
Avatar is when I drove up the Bohemia mining saddle in Oregon, a fairly well-known 4WD trail around here.
