How to test the secondary ignition coils resistance on a 97 ford ranger 4cyl?
I tested the primary coil resistance using a digital multimeter set on Ohms. One of the primary coils gave me a 1.0 Ohm reading and the other primary coil gave me a 0.9 reading which according to my manual is within spec. My problem is I don't know how to test the secondary coils. Do I need any special tools or can I use the digital multimeter I have?
This is what the manual says on checking the secondary coils resistance- Measure using an Ohmmeter and note the resistance between each corresponding coil terminal and the two spark plug wire towers on the ignition coil. The coil terminals and plug wires are grouped as follows
Terminal 1 (coil 2)-spark plugs 2 and 3
Terminal 3 (coil 1)-spark plugs 1 and 4
Terminal 1 (coil 4)-spark plugs 2 and 3
Terminal 3 (coil 3)-spark plugs 1 and 4
I am not an electrician so I don't really understand any of this. What is a spark plug wire tower? Where do I need to place the positive and negative leads to get these readings? Every time I try to test it I get a 0.0 reading so I know I'm doing something wrong. Please help me figure this out. Thanks
