Default What happens when you cross signal and ground wires?

I'm not smartest guy when it comes to electrical stuff. I was trying to check my MAF sensor with a digital multimeter on my 1997 2.3 Ranger and I think I crossed the signal and ground wires on the MAF sensor wiring harness. Now my truck will only run for a few minutes then the motor starts idling super rough and dies. I'm not sure what I did but I know I messed something. Any help would be great.

I was trying to measure the voltage between terminals C and D on the wiring harness connector and I touched the ground part of the DMM to terminal C and positive part of the DMM to the D terminal when I think I should have done it the other way around.

if you use a dmm and mix up the positive and negitive it will just read as a negitave number instead of a positive number. ex. if i check the batteries volts and put the red lead on positive and black on neg it should read a 12.??? but if i put red on neg and black on pos. it would just read -12.??? . do you understand? they will not effect anything that you are testing.

----------

what you should try would to start truck and while it is running unplug the maf sensor and see if there is a change in the trucks idle. then plug it back up and make sure it is completely plugged in. this will eliminated the maf from the problem. if nothing changes when u pull it then the maf is the problem. if it has change in ilde and dies or stalls then ur problem lies somewhere else. let me know what u find

I did what you said. Started the truck up and it was idling rough like usual then I disconnected the MAF wiring harness and the engine immediately died and wouldn't start again. I then reconnected the MAF sensor and she started right up so I'm guessing the MAF is in good working order.
