Exclamation 4x4 module

So i am not 100% sure this is the place to put this but i am having trouble with my 4-wheel drive and they tell me it is a module that is between the 4x4 switch and the system. i was told it is a box that a bunch of wires go into and come out and they said it is dieing. The estimate to fix this mysterious box/module is about 550 with labor. (300 for part). I am sorry i don't know specifics. I am real handy and have replaced or fixed just about everything else on my truck i am wondering if anyone has a clue on the part and how to repair it. Thanks for the help i appreciate it.

are you talking about the computer that (for me) is behind my drivers seat that activates the 4x4 that makes the clicking noise when you click 4x4 hi or lo on the dash. you can test that part to see if it is even broken. you unplug the top 8-10 pin connector and press the reset button. it should flash 4-5 times before it stops, but if it dosnt your computer may have a problem

I am looking for the electronic module that relays from the switch to the actual actuator motor. I was told it had a lot of wires and chances are that inside one has come apart or rusted out. Does anyone know where it is located on a 1999 ford ranger. It isn't behind the drivers seat like state above. thank you for all your help.

In 99 4wd functions are powered by the GEM, which also controls wipers and interior lights. Odds are if it goes bad the other functions dont work either.

Shift motor is highly suspect in all years, and in 99 the PVH hubs are garbage and should be swapped out for the manual upgrade.

In the 1999 Ranger XLT 4X4 it is located BEHIND the radio so you have to remove the radio and associated trim pieces in order to access the GEN for removal/replacement.
