Default resistor pack troubleshooting.

My blower works only on the 2 highest speeds. I pulled the pack, expecting to see a "pack" of resistors, but, what I see is a resistor and, well, a pack of springs.

I am curious about how this device works. Does it have some way of measuring the airflow past it?

Is there a way of troubleshooting beyond just cleaning it and it's connections?

Replaced mine a few months ago. Those springs are resistors in series directing current to the blower motor through all, incrementally fewer or none depending on switch position. Think of toaster elements. Not high-tech but functional. Not expensive to replace if you have it out already.
