Default Parking brake light always on -and- AC lighting out

Hey all,

Great forum here. First posting. Hope y'all can help. I have a 2000 Ranger XLT 4-cyl. My left half of instrument cluster lamps are out...and I've already seen the walkthru for that. Great pictures and explanation.

But also, all the air conditioning/heat knob illumination lamps are out. How can I get in there to replace those bulbs?

Also for several years, my parking brake light always stays on. Early on I just work the parking brake release cable back and forth and it would go off. Now it is always on. I've heard there is a switch under there some place that regulates the illumination of *red* brake on the lower right instrument panel. Where is it? Can it be replaced? Thanks!

** UPDATE: I found the post where someone showed the procedure for changing the color of their AC illumination by pulling the face of the AC off, etc, etc, but did not discuss of replacing a bad lamp...I suppose then the lamp is behind that face plate..I couldn't see it from the pictures. But anyway. This is such a GREAT forum! **

hvac lights are same as dashlights (twist ins), hvac lights are same as dashlights (twist ins), remove radio bezel, remove hvac controls for rear access
e-brake switch should be activated by the e-pedal

Also, keep in mind, that dashlight also serves as a warning light for a low fluid level in the system. Double check your fluid level/make sure there are no leaks.

Thanks for the quick info. So do you (or anyone) know the common bulb part number so I can have them handy which I change I pull the instrument cluster? (Not sure if it would be listed up at Autozone or wheverer in the parts catalog--or stamped into the existing lamps).

.
I wonder where this elusive switch is and what does it look like. I couldn't find any information on it in my Haynes repair manual.

Continuing saga....

Well I looked down under the steering column in the parking brake assembly area this morning. I see the switch on the floor: spring loaded plunger. When I activate it (press down) the light goes off (aka brake release). When the parking brake is set, the assembly is far far away from the switch (which it should be). Problem is when the parking brake is off, the part of the brake assembly which I suppose should be pressing the plunger in is....it is about 1/8" from the plunger.. So not sure what might be out of adjustment--or something is broken off from the brake assembly which pushes the plunger in. When I manaully pushed in the switch back and forth, the light would go on and off as expected. It doesn't look like the plunger is not going out far enough...in other words, it looks ok. Will try to get some pictures today to show all this.

Your return spring is probably worn. That is the issue with mine. Untill I can either tweak mine or get a replacement, I help the pedal up with my foot while holding the release lever.
