has anyone installed a brake controller
Has anyone installed a brake controller? Did the 2001 ranger edge 4x4 come with the factory flat 4 tow connector? I have one on my truck but not sure if it was factory installed.
I need to have a 7 pole plug so as my trailer will have electric brakes so I need to wire a new plug and a brake controller any info on any of this would be appreciated
even as to which type of controller to use
thanks

Re: has anyone installed a brake controller
Might be something you may want to show/ask about at a Ford dealer Craig. Or a good trailer dealer. Try Google-ing about it..don't like the 1st results..change the wording slightly of your search. I've come across better results for something WEEKS later...with the same search words with just one more slight change.
Hey..you ever see a Gila Monster there?

Re: has anyone installed a brake controller
I don't think all Rangers necessarily came with a 4-Way, but if you have a working one on the truck, you've got about 1/2 the wiring done for a 7-Way.
Were you able to get the controller in and working, or are you still working on it?

Re: has anyone installed a brake controller
Ive done it before. Where I used to work, we had a '98 Chevy 2500 that didnt even come with a hitch (yeah, a HD truck that didnt come with a hitch) but that had absolutely no wiring for a trailer. I wired in the 7 pin myself, and I hard wired the brake controller.
Like ^ Patrick said, youre basically half way there. Just cut the 4-Pin out strip the wires and connect them to the 7-pin. 1 of the wires thats left is the one that controls the brakes. But Im not sure about the other 2, Its been awhile since Ive done this. But I know the 7 Pin plug that we bought had a wiring diagram on the back of that told you what goes where, and the brake controller itself had a wiring diagram also. I could be wrong, but there should be only 3 or 4 wires that come out of the brake controller, 1 being connected to the 7-pin harness and 1 would be Power for the controller, not sure about the other 1 or 2
Hope this helps, but like I said, I havent done this in about 2 years or so, so Im not 100% on everything.

Yeah, it is in and working just got in from doing the power adjustment .
the truck had a 4 plug but both plugs had a rubber boot or sheild to keep debri out had to cut it off the one plug but it was still a loose connection so just hard wired them into the etbc 7 plug wires .
all is good.
just only thing when you are in a garage and no internet, and no instructions as to what wires go to the circuit breakers etc.. but got it and double checked the site and found a set of directions .

Creating instructions for something like a universal 7-Way is not an easy task. Because they can be installed on virtually every vehicle and virtually every vehicle is wired differently, a set of instructions could be more harmful then helpful.
The best thing to do is grab a circuit tester and know which leads on the 7-Way need to go to which circuit. Use the circuit tester to find those wires and splice up.
We have those diagrams with the wires labeled. I'll see what we can do with them.

Re: has anyone installed a brake controller
bump!
has/does anyone know if there is a plug under the dash for the brake controller if the truck came with factory tow pkg..?
I have no problem wiring my brake controller and understand what I need to do, but would rather use the factory plug if there is one.

Re: has anyone installed a brake controller
I have seen a few plugs under the dash that go to nothing, just wondering if one of those would be it...

According to draw tight, there's a four pin under the dash for one, if you have a factory tow package
