ABS light is on - and I DON'T have ABS
I have a '97 Ranger, Supercab stepside with the smaller V6 (3.0L?). It's got about 180,000 on the odometer and has been a pretty good truck!
About 4 months ago the ABS light appeared on the dash. But this truck doesn't have ABS. I checked the primary power distribution center under the hood and there are no ABS related fuses in those spots. I did pull the ABS fuse in the main fuse panel (by the drivers door) in an attempt to "reset" whatever triggered this, but no joy there either.
I don't see any wires loose or broken under the hood.
Any ideas what else could cause the ABS light to come on?
THANKS!!

I'm 99.999% sure that my Ranger does not have ABS. I've locked up the brakes in the snow and on wet pavement on more than one occasion. I do not see any sensor rings on the axles and the master cylinder area looks "normal" - ie, there is no second ABS distribution manifold, etc. I could be wrong though.
Anyone else?

Your 97 definitely came from the factory with ABS. It is either rear only ABS or 4 wheel ABS depending on how the truck was optioned.

Go to the brake master cylinder, follow the brake lines that come out of it.
They should go to an aluminum block with lines and a wire harness attached to it, they were mounted in various places, but mostly they are close to the master cylinder. The rear wheel ABS computer is real small compared to the 4 wheel ABS.
From late '92 on, (the '93 model year mostly) all RBV's had ABS.
Locking up brakes on slick or wet surfaces is not a sure sign of not having ABS. The way the systems are set up, is to pulse the brake when the brake is applied and resistance is felt by the computer, when no resistance is felt the brakes will lock, but during panic stop it takes a moments for the ABS to react, then the brake will pulse by way of the ABS computer.

ive had a 98 xlt (r.i.p) and i have now a 96 and both never had abs but had the abs light and i now it was for the rear wheels i believe its called rwal for rear wheel anti-lock. the only time my abs light came on was when the front caliper broke and it was using the rear brakes like it should. just something info to give you

Starting in 93 or 94 all Rangers came with standard ABS on the rear.

Assuming that the Ranger and the X came out with ABS in the same year, the 92 X I have has rear ABS, the build date on the door tag is 8-10-91.

U.S. production Rangers (other markets may be different):
1989~1994:
RABS (1-channel, 2-wheel, rear-only ABS) was standard factory equipment.
1995~2000:
4WABS (3-channel, 4-wheel ABS) was available depending on option content.
RABS continued to be standard equipment on all Rangers that were not equipped with 4WABS.
2001~present:
4WABS + EBFD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) has been standard factory equipment. (RABS discontinued.)
