Post not starting

92 2.3 will not start when motor is cold. you can roll start it, or jump it(even though it cranks good with out jumper cables). after it is warm it will start off the key,and runs great. i have replaced the coil packs, ignition module, temp sensor, plugs, new battery(875cca), cable ends. i am really stumped on this one some one please help me out

Have you checked the starter?

If its good:
When is the last time you changed your oil/ what viscosity are you using? The cold oil could cause just enough friction to keep your starter from turning the truck over. Rolling it would produce a lot more force than your starter. After the vehicle has warmed up the friction would be less. Just a thought.

Have you tried taking spark plugs out and grounding them to the block or another metal surface and checked for spark that way. (I would use another spark plug to plug the hole, or just pull the wire and connect another spark plug to the wire.....you don't want gas shooting out as you crank the engine).

----------

I would check all your connections from the battery down to the starter. Even a very slightly loose connection can become a good connection after it has been heated up (the metal expands).

not too sure. I've tried looking around online for some wiring diagrams.....so far no good. Autozone's site has a big check list to go through if your truck isn't starting, but its pretty complex. It has you checking resistances on pins on the computer and some other crazy stuff. I'm sure its probably something simple.

Sounds like somewhere you are not getting enough amps going through your starter, its starting just not enough force.

When its starting does it sound different when its cold and hot? Does it sound slightly slower when its cold?

It's cranking over just fine. Just not firing. So I don't think it is low voltage or oil viscosity. I think it's going to be relay or switch that is worn out and the cold contracting metal parts is causing a lack of contact while starting.

If it pop starts, then you know you are getting power to everything with the key on. Fuel, spark, computers, etc. If it will not fire with the key turned to start, then I think the problem is the key cylinder making bad contact in the cold in the start position.

I am going to go get a solinoid to see if that helps. a guy told me today the one on the fender supplys power to the coil while cranking. Is he right?
