Default Weird Electrical Issues, Water?

Hello,

2005 Ranger 2WD, 3.0 V6 5 speed auto.

The wee beastie leaks like a sieve in the sub-tropical climate here. That's another thread as well. But, I suspect the leakage is causing electrical issues, not sure though.
This truck was unretired a month ago. Catchup maintenance was done, no problems. About 2 weeks ago I noticed that the headlights wouldn't come on unless I jiggled the switch. Then 2 days ago, just poking along at 45 mph, it started a horrendous squealing behind the dash on the driver's side. Like all the warning sounds were going on continously and at once. Really painful sound!

Got it home, started fiddling around with it. If I opened a door, turned off the AC fan or used a power window, it would stop until I undid one of those steps.
Parked it for a couple days and tried it again. It was quiet at startup, but after it warmed up it began again.
Any idea? I am really NOT wanting to tear out the dash, but if I have to....

TIA for any suggestions.

Not sure about the policy on bumping one's own thread, but.......................I sure as hell am not posting booby pics!

My biggest concern about the water/electrical issue is if it's safe to drive? If I'm tootling down the local highway, is it going to conk out and lock the steering wheel? Or is that only a problem if I shift the auto tranny out of D?

I can handle strong arm steering and no booster brakes, what I can't handle is NO steering.

C'mon guys, help the old lady across the street as your good deed for the day.

Further update and plea for advice - I've been driving it daily and as long as I keep a window cracked or open it doesn't squeal. Werid.

The steering wheel lock is part of the key cylinder. It only locks when you turn the key to off.

There are several electronics modules behind the dash. The GEM comes to mind if its effected by windows and doors. It probably got wet and corroded out.

Pull the passenger side kick panel and check the Smart Junction Box (combination fuse panel/body module/security module). 2004+ sometimes have a problem with water getting in there during heavy rain and causing all sorts of strange problems.

Aha! I reckon I made a good guess. 3 days ago I pulled that kick panel and ran all the errands with the AC on full tilt boogie. I was thinking it would help dry it out, since most of the water pools on the passenger side flooring.

Drove all over the freaking county yesterday, not one squeal. Now I need to figure out HOW the water is getting in and stop that.

I'll be figuring out how to get to the GEM, too. Once I figure out WTH it is.... I really need a "Children's Manual" for this buggy.

Thanks for the help and advice, much appreciated.

I thought that was the case. But never too careful for me. I'm big on the "belt and suspenders" approach.

Thank you.

Don't bother looking because there is no GEM in 2004+ Rangers. The GEM functions are now integrated into the Smart Junction Box.
