Thumbs down cluster lights wont turn on.

so im tyring to put a light strip under my tailgate. it has one wire that needs to be connected with a power source so i figured i will connect it to my drivers side tail light because i read on the package of another light set thats what you should connect it to (mine doesnt come with instructions, yeah its stupid) so i ended up cutting all the wires on my brake light (none the reverse ones though) and couldnt figure out which one to put it with because none of them worked.i ended up accidentally connecting two wires coming from the truck together when the lighs where on and i noticed the wire got red hot and smoked a little. thats when i was like oh shit and seperated them asap. the tail light stopped working all together and i was freaking out. i decided not to do anything else so i just reconnected the wires the way theyre supposed to and put it back on. then i thought to my self what if i turn the truck on? i dont know why i thought that i just thought it would help. so i turned it on and the light turned on and now its fine. HOWEVER, my cluster with the speedometer and everything wont light light up and neither will the control panel for the ac n stuff. i checked some fuses and they seemed ok, i dont know if im checking the right ones though. so yeah. please help.i dont know what else to do? i feel so stupid.

also if you know where i could connect that wire to turn on the 6 damn leds that would be very much appreciated.

you blew a fuse, just check em all

and as to where to connect the wire, you shouldnt be cutting into shit, you should be using wiretaps, id suggest just tapping into one of the hotwires leading to the lights for your license plate.

do you know what wire specifically i should tap into? how do i tell if its a hot wire? i really dont want anymore problems.

yes, use those. and no you dont need to cut it, place the wire your tapping into in the inside slot, and the wire your using in the outside slot, then take a pair of pliers and mash it down, the metal part will cut into the wire and completes the tap

and as to the hot wire on the license plate light, on my truck there was only 2 wires going to each, and the brown one is the ground, and i dont recall the other color but that was the hot.

ok well i just went out side and crawled under my truck to check the license plate wires. i have two. its dark so it hard to tell but it looks like i have one brown or black wire with a yellow stripe and a light gray wire. i should probably tap into the light gray wire correct?

the bar itself is made of metal and it looks as though it grounds into itself so im assuming no.

they turn on when you turn your parking lights on (tails and corners), theyre switched power, not constant.

Tap into the trailer harness. Easiest place ever to tap into. None of this garbage of tapping into the license plate lights or the taillight lamp crap. Go trailer harness. Brown = running lamp(aka constant whenever you click the headlight switch). White = ground.

If the light has one wire, then it's grounded via the mounting and the wire is the power. If it's got two wires, one is power one is ground.

Standard Trailer harness colors are as follows:

Brown = tail/running lights
Yellow = left signal/brake
Green = right signal/brake
White = ground.
