Yup, that will work fine. I'd still recommend getting a harness, though. it would make swapping back to the factory speakers or a different set much easier. But still, doing it your way is not a problem.

I went the cheap way (cheap in the short run at least) and just chopped off the harness for the speakers...

Why no sub? Just out of curiosity. I think if I were to put a sub in my truck again I would go with this:
Kenwood KSC-SW10 Compact powered subwoofer at Crutchfield.com
Can fit under the seat of my truck it appears, so no loss of space, plus can easily strap it down for offroading.
My last truck I had a Basslink with bungees holding it it down...haha

I just bought a pair of Pioneer 6x8's from Crutchfield. The bass is absolutely amazing. If I get a second pair of those same speakers, I actually might not need a sub. The frequency response goes down to 35hz, and the bass shakes the truck...and my innards.

Which 6x8s did you get? I have some Pioneer 6x8 4 ways (do not know why i went with 4-ways...stupid mistake), on sale at Best buy for $40 a pair or something a year or so back.

I got these. Outstanding bass, without compromising the mids/highs at all.
They have great specs, and the speakers definitely deliver. Only thing is that the sensitivity is a little lower than some other speakers, but one extra notch up on the volume takes care of that.
Pioneer Premier TS-D802P 6"x8" 2-way speakers at Crutchfield.com
