Oh really? I haven't done one before... I'll give it a shot tomorrow afternoon.

I did double check ALL fuses. All in tact. So bummed out. I bought it on Thursday and I got to drive it maybe 80 miles before this...

So, Troy are you sure that the light is directly related to the battery charging? I'm not so much questioning you so much as questioning the engineer that designed that.......

I agree, if that is in fact true that is the battery light is burnt out, the alternator stops charging, thats dumb, but your battery light should be on if its not getting a charge.

The dash is completely dark, except for the blinking THEFT light. If I turn the headlights on, the backlight DOES come on however.

Does that change anything regarding the dash? I'm still going to pull it because one of the dash backlights is out.

EDIT: The Fuel gauge and the engine temperature gauge work just fine... but everything to the left of that is broken.

In the dash, yes. Except the THEFT light does still blink/solid when starting.

Well, I certainly appreciate the effort.

There's a guy at the Schucks/Oreilly that isn't yet ASE cert'd but said he'd look at it with me... I might only need to buy him a beer.

I'll keep this thread updated.

if you have a local u-pull it, i would see if you can get your hands on a cheap cluster. for that much to be wrong with it, it could be the circuit board, or even a ground somewhere. at minimum, i would pull it out, pull it apart and check all the bulbs.

Ok, just swapped with a cluster from a guy off Craigslist, paid $20, and this one isn't working... NONE of the gauges work.

If a instrument cluster is not getting signals, where would you guys look? Like, you have a known good cluster, pulled from a working truck, put it on yours and nothing works - what would you look at?

Thanks so much for the help guys.

Exclamation Re: Battery not charging, no speedo/odo/right gauges

Ok guys, I got her running. Here's the timeline for what happened on the truck in case someone else runs into something similar:
  • Driving home, I begin to lose the instrument cluster - one gauge at a time over 30sec
  • Then the truck stalls out, acted as if the alternator died and the truck was running off of the battery.
  • Got her home, cleaned up terminals and charged battery overnight.
  • Next day: truck starts right up, but is only running off the battery, alternator not charging and I still don't have any gauges working (in my posts above, I thought the fuel/temp gauges were working, but they actually weren't)
  • Pulled alternator and took it in to get tested, I pulled the voltage regulator first and found the brushes were worn down to the springs.
  • Got a replacement alternator, put it in the truck, but the battery still wouldn't charge
  • checked ALL* fuses and connections - sprayed MAF cleaner on PCM
  • removed alternator, took it into OReilly, failed the test so they gave me a replacement. I had them test the replacement before leaving (like I should have done the first time), tested good.
  • Installed new, guaranteed working alternator - still no charge at the battery OR at the alternator (tested using voltmeter at the big cable on the alt and the neg terminal on the battery) AND still no instrument cluster gauges
  • Thinking I had another bad alternator - or maybe I fried it somehow (I did disconnect the battery both times before installing), I pulled the alt once again and took it in. This one tested good again.
  • Re-installed, still no charge, I'm frustrated as hell, I checked all grounds for continuity, I put the voltmeter on the case of the alt and on the body and sure enough, there was a connection.
  • I had read somewhere on this forum that if the battery light is blown the battery won't charge, so I started looking into getting the cluster working to see if maybe that's where my problems were.
  • So I bought the second cluster off a guy from Craigslist. Replaced the cluster and the gauges STILL weren't working and the battery still wasn't charging.
  • Thinkin maybe this guy off CL had just taken my money, I went to a junkyard and was able to find an Explorer cluster circuit panel, completely stripped of gauges and lights. Meh, it's worth a shot. Only cost $7.58
  • Re-installed the new cluster, using my original gauges and lights (bought new bulbs though), and no dice. SONOFA... ggrrrrr
  • So then I started looking at the fuses. They all were good, none of them were blown. I pulled the fuse panel in the drivers side door and checked the connections in the back... they all looked good, except ONE looked like it wasn't going to anything.
    • ok, so some of you are probably like, 'duh' right now... it took me a minute.
  • I quickly went back inside and checked the online owners manual (https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=h...nuals/2001.pdf) I scrolled down to the roadside assistance page and checked the fuses.
  • FUSE 11: 7.5A Instrument Cluster and FUSE 15 Not Used
  • When checking fuses, I MUST have swapped those two. I pulled 15 and put it in 11 and BAM everything started working.

So, yeah, my own n00bish mistake. Lesson learned, double check the fuses and FUSE PLACEMENT!

Thanks to everyone to helped on this thread - you at least pointed me in the right direction.
