junkyard alternator?

so the alternator in the truck just went out and i found a couple of used car part shops aka junkyards that have some for pretty cheap. do different years rangers accept the same alternator? i found some from a 03, 01 and 06 but not any 04s. same engine and everything though. and what are yalls opinions about used alternators from junkyards? should i just spend the 50 bucks and hope it lasts or should i spend the extra and get one brand new

I don't know if a different year would fit, I know on my GMC I bought one off a 2000 and its worked great, as far as I know as long as there weren't any major changes in the engines for those years it should work just fine. I paid 35 bucks for my alternator in my GMC and it has lasted longer then the "new" (reman fml) one I bought for my GMC. My biggest thing was to find the newest truck to the yard, and that was in the best shape, at least in the front end. If the truck caught on fire, looks like it went through a flood, or has no hood, something along those lines I wouldn't touch it.

An alternator shop should be able to rebuild yours for less than $100. I wouldn't waste my time with a junkyard one unless you are strapped for cash.

If you decide to go the used route, www.mypartshop.com and www.car-part.com will help you out with the years that interchange. Good luck. You could probably pick up a reman unit at Rock Auto for a reasonable price.

i picked up a 130 amp one out of an 01 explorer and put it in my 95. i paid $35 for it, had it bench tested on my way home from the yard. works like a champ.

I got a 2008 Ford ranger alt. with 8k miles for 45 dollars.

yea the day after i made this thread i got an alternator from an 06 for 50 bucks from a junkyard. it didnt look like it was in good shape but it works fine. man it was a pain in the ass getting to it tho because of the damn ac compressor and some other little things i had to take out.

that sucks. it took me about 10 minutes to put mine in, even altering the wiring.
