Default '97 Ranger Wiper Cuts Out

Start the truck, turn on the windshield wipers, they run for 10 seconds and then shut off. The wipers return to their parked position, i.e. they don't stop in the middle of the windshield.

I then shut off the ignition, restart, and wipers will not turn on at all. Will not turn on in the middle of a trip. Also not getting any wiper fluid wash (fluid is in the reservoir.)

Fuses are good. Any way to test the relays?

Any help is much appreciated,

Paul

Swapped out the run and hi/lo relays with no improvement.

Cleaned out the intermittent switch arm on the steering column with electrical contact cleaner. No improvement.

Guess it's the wiper motor.

Not the wiper motor.

It was the multifunction switch. $67 at AutoZone. Washer now works, too.

How hard was replacing the switch?

When replacing the switch, no need to remove lower panel. It's 3 Phillips-head screws on the shroud, and two T20 Torx screws on the switch. Biggest pain is getting the top shroud out from over the flasher switch and ignition start switch on the column.

My wipers intermittent feature only works at the highest speed. They worked once or twice at the lower speeds/more delay. I'm thinking the rheostat is dirty. How did you get to this? I honestly haven't looked to see if the column covers come off. One of many minor issues I'm trying to fix.

88 XLT 2.3 5-speed with a buttload of miles on it.

See my post above for my 1997, but I replaced the entire switch (which includes the turn signal level.) If yours is an '88, the column configuration is likely different.

mine is on it's own stalk, right behind the turn signals. Probably comes apart the same

Pics didn't post. I'll figure it out. It's pretty low on my priorities right now. Next time I remove the gauges to check lights I'll probably try to pull the column apart and at least clean the switches. I still have to hook the arm up for the passenger side wiper....
I'm mostly fiddling under the hood right now.

Tom
