Default Wiring Problem !! Has to do with transmission !!!

I've got a 92 ranger 4cl 5sp. The reverse lights never worked but once during the winter. I just recently checked the wiring and the sensor/switch on the transmission and both are perfectly good. My problem is that when I shift into reverse the lights do not come on. There is a little pin that pushes the switch in there so nothing is missing but I dont understand what the problem is. could it just be wear and tear and the cam that pushes the pin is worn enough to be just short of contacting? or is there something wrong with my tranny. everything works.... but for some reason the switch is not being activated...
