Default Dome light

I just bought a 1997 ranger. I noticed that the bulb from the dome light was missing so I replaced it. Now I can't get the light to turn off. Yes I've done the whole dimmer thing, so I removed the bulb. Any suggestions about the light staying on? Thanks

Possible the switch is broken?

Not a good thing if it stays on. Even with the bulb removed it could still be drawing power.

There is no switch on the light itself, nor can I find one on the door hinge. I sure hope that it's not drawing power even without a bulb!

I had this same problem. Spray some WD40 into the three holes inside the door hinge. Open and close it a few times after you spray it in. This should fix your problem.

the problem is most likely one or both of these things: the door switch may be sticking easiest fix is just like Dcrymes99ranger said. the other possibility is the dimmer/headlight switch is broke. try fixing the door switches first and if that is not the problem replace the switch.

Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum. I am having the reverse problem that others in this thread are having.
I have a 1995 Ranger 4cyl. and the dome light stays on for about 5 seconds when the door is opened, then inexplicably turn OFF by itself. Any thoughts? Oh yeah, I am unable to locate the switch that controls the dome light. There is NO visible switch in the door jam.
I called my dealership and they told me it was a "GEM", meaning a Generating (?) Electric Module, or something like that.
Any thoughts and I would be grateful.

Many thanks,
Mark

the switch to turn the dome light on with the door is located on the door latch inside your door. spraying the latch with wd40 will get the switch working again for some time. most never have a problem again. make it part of your scheduled maintenance to spray the latches down.

the only other way to turn the dome light on is by the dimmer switch on the dash.

I've found the dimmer wheel but moving it doesn't affect the dome light ( which it should).

then it sounds like the switch in the door latch. spray some wd40 on it, open and close it a few times and see what happens.

Hi everyone,

I decided to take the door apart, and replace the switch. The switch was $24.00 from the dealership. It is located in the door catch, and has some weird way to be removed which I have not figured out yet. Actually, there are two switches, and two wiring harnessess for the switches. I have no idea what the other one does.

Hahaha! that switch was a real pain in the rear! You are correct, it turns a 1/4 turn for removal. I removed and washed the lock mechanism with WD-40, greased it with lithium grease, reinstalled the new switch, and reassembled the door molding. Everything is awesome now. As I said before, it was a real pain; but my Ranger is in EXCELLENT condition and I want to keep it that way. I have people compliment me all the time on its good shape. This is amazing considering it is a 15 year old vehicle, I live in Michigan, and we have real harsh winters with lots of salt on the roads.
Many thanks again!
