Default Overdrive switch wiring

I've had my 2005 STX for 9 years and have had the o/d switch wiring break 4 times already. Each time, the wires appear to have fatigue failure at the bottom of the shifter lever. I have replaced the section with multi-strand wire to try to alleviate this but it keeps coming back.

Ranger is my second car so I'm only doing 1000 miles a month max. It's not as if I'm working the shifter overtime!

Anyone have any ideas on this and how to fix it permanently? Thanks in advance
