Default Intermittent sputtering episodes...electrical gremlin?

2010, 4cyl, 2WD, regular cab, 117k miles.

I've been doing temp work for Census, driving about a hundred miles a day.

A few days ago, all of a sudden, my truck started sputtering, coughing so badly that I was forced to pull over. After sitting there about 5 minutes I tried starting it. It ran fine. I was about half-way through a tank of gas and the sputtering reminded me of decades ago, when occasionally you'd get a bit of water in the gas, so I topped the tank up.

Two days later, with another tank of gas, it started sputtering again, on a long stretch, then *poof* has been fine for the past 50 miles.

I was hoping this would ring a bell with someone to point to the issue. Intermittent problems are wicked.
